Virginia Louise Lawson

SPENCER - Virginia Louise Lawson, 95, of Greenville and formerly of Spencer, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Born Feb. 24, 1912, in Rowan County she was the daughter of the late Julian Wells Lawson and Agnes McLeod Lawson. She was a Cum Laude graduate of Catawba College and earned a degree in Library Science from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Miss Lawson served as a public school librarian in Forsyth County, Concord High School and Knox Junior High School in Salisbury. For six years, she was the Head of the Reference and Circulation Department at Davidson College Library, Davidson. Summer positions included being a staff member of the Tremont Branch of the New York Public Library, teaching Library Science at Wingate College and Appalachian State University.

She was a lifetime member of Central United Methodist Church in Spencer and a member of the Administrative Board. She served as church librarian, literature secretary, and coordinator of Meals on Wheels. Her hobbies were wood carving, and writing short true stories of small animal pets.

Miss Lawson was one of the editors and contributors to the Volume Central United Methodist Church, Spencer North Carolina 1897-1997. She was a "Distinguished Contributor" to The Heritage of Rowan County, Volume I, by recommendation of the National Heritage Book Collection, on Dec. 15, 1995.

Miss Lawson was preceded in death by her sisters, Geneva L. Grant of Thomasville, and Margaret Elizabeth Lawson of Salisbury and Greenville.

She leaves behind to celebrate her life, nieces, Jane Bennett and husband Wilbur, of Greenville, Pam Tapp and husband Jim of Jefferson; great nieces and nephews, Lynn Hodges and husband Kim, Lisa Woodard and husband Jerry, Britt Laughinghouse and wife Paige, Chip Laughinghouse, all of Greenville, Jay Tapp of Kannapolis and great-great nieces and nephews, Lauren and Kailey Tapp of Kannapolis, Kelly Hodges, of Wilmington, Kevin Hodges, Scott Hodges and Britton Laughinghouse, all of Greenville.

Visitation: 11-11:30 a.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church, Spencer.

Service: 11:30 a.m. Monday, at Central United Methodist Church, Spencer, with the Rev. Dr. Robert T. McLawhorn and the Rev. Eugene Dean, officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.

The family would like to thank the staff and management of Carolina House, the staff at Silver Care, with a special thanks to Betty Dixon and Charlene Huggins, also the staff at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, with a special thank you to Dr. Patel, Kimberly Ennis and everyone in Focus Care.

"Biddie" led her life as a testament to her belief in God, and everyday was special to her. She was loved by all who knew her. Biddie's wit, wisdom and love of life will be missed by all.
