Virginia O'Connor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 11, 2025.
Port Charlotte - Virginia Rae O'Connor, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2025 in Port Charlotte, Florida. Her husband, William O'Connor, preceded her in death on October 11, 2024. She was the only child of the late James and Lucy (Cummings) Rae of Plymouth.

She lived a long life filled with love with her husband of 74 years. Both, William and Virginia were born in Plymouth in 1930 and met at the Cornish Burton School in 1940. They were married in 1951 and had two sons, Billy and Jimmy.

Her nurturing and compassionate nature led Virginia into the healthcare field where she became the Supervising Nurse in the Maternity Ward of Jordan Hospital from 1965 to 1977. In 1977 she welcomed the opportunity to become the School Nurse at the Plymouth Carver Intermediate School (PCIS) and held that position until her retirement in 1985.

Over her 20-year nursing career in Plymouth, Virginia cared for the families she grew up with. From comforting expectant mothers and holding their newborns in her arms to nurturing and caring for some of those same newborns as teens. She came into the lives of thousands of Plymouthians during those years and made a loving and lasting impact.

After retirement, Bill and Jinny (as they were known to family and friends) sold their home on Centennial Street and moved to South Meadow Village in Carver. At that time, they also purchased a home in Port Charlotte, Florida where they wintered, returning to Plymouth during the Summer months. In 1995, they sold their Carver residence and moved to Florida permanently where they lived for the next 29 years with friends, family and in each other's loving company.

Virginia was a member of the Plymouth Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Plymouth Yacht Club and the Auxiliary at American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte.

Virginia is survived by her son, James Rae O'Connor of Port Charlotte, FL, her former daughter-in-laws, Natalie (Bonfiglio) Romano of Plymouth, MA and Dawn O'Connor of Port Charlotte, FL, her granddaughters, Melissa O'Connor Johnson of Port Charlotte, FL, Tina (O'Connor) Pratt of Sagamore Beach, MA, Cadence (O'Connor) Harmon of Port Charlotte, FL, and Melody O'Connor of Brockton, MA and her great-grandchildren, John Paquette, Maxx O'Connor Black, Valley O'Connor Harmon, Amber Ferreira and Adrianna O'Connor.

She was the mother of the late William "Billy" O'Connor of Plymouth, MA.

Virginia and William were interred at Sarasota National Cemetery on June 30th which was attended by family and close friends. The family asks that any memorial donations or contributions be made to the ASPCA.
