WHITLEY-GARNER AT ROSEHAVEN FUNERAL HOME FUNERAL NOTICE / OBITUARY
Virginia Lee Brannen Quattlebaum
Mrs. Virginia Quattlebaum, age 73, of Douglasville, GA died Monday, January 12, at the Wellstar Hospital in Douglasville, GA. Born June 20, 1941 in Atlanta, GA, she was a graduate of J. C. Murphy High School where she excelled in basketball. Virginia won city of Atlanta recognition playing the position of guard and leading her team as MVP to win the Girls Basketball State Championships in 1957 and 1958. When asked how she always detected the direction of opposing players, she responded, “Coach said to watch the belt buckle. It turns in the direction of the player.” Virginia was a natural athlete, winning second in the city of Atlanta tennis competition. She also won championships in ping-pong. However, she won her best prize when she met Joe, her husband of 50 years, at the Bowling Alley! Virginia and Joe continued their love of sports second to the love they shared for their children and grandchildren throughout their life together.
Virginia first worked at the Atlanta Girls Club followed by working many years at the Fulton National Bank as secretary to the Vice-President. Virginia is said to have had a photographic memory, being able to instantly recall identification numbers of every bank in Georgia. She was often tapped for special assignments featuring her exceptionally beautiful handwriting. Virginia took many years off to work as a homemaker and raise her three children. Later, Virginia worked as office manager for a staffing firm in Atlanta. She was an admired and beloved supervisor dedicated to the productivity and protection of the employees which ultimately ended her working career as she stepped in to defend a coworker from a violent intruder. This was not Virginia’s only traumatic experience as she and Joe were caught in the midst of hurricane Wilma in 2005 while on vacation in Tulum, Mexico. Later in life, Virginia worked part-time with a CPA firm in Douglasville, TD Connally, Financial Consultants.
Mrs. Quattlebaum was preceded in death by her husband Joe Ben “JB” Quattlebaum, her parents, Ellis DeWitt Brannen & Margaret Beatrice Knox; grandparents L.A. Brannen and Laura Byrd Brannen; and sister, Nancy Brannen Webster.
She is survived by daughters, Jennifer Quattlebaum Garrett and spouse Bowman Staples Garrett III, Stephanie Quattlebaum Mashburn and spouse James Chad Mashburn; son, Nathan Adam Quattlebaum and spouse Sonya Echols Quattlebaum; grandchildren, Josiah Soren Garrett, Coleman West Garrett, Asher Brannen Garrett, Brendan Jacob Bickleman, Kellen James Mashburn, Hannah Williams, Jordyn Bailee Quattlebaum; brother, Samuel “Hugh” Brannen; sister, Margaret Brannen Austin; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
Mrs. Quattlebaum was cremated and the family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

I will miss them both. I grew up only 7 to 8 years behind Joe and Virginia. They were my teenage role models! I had often wondered who in the world could be the match for JB? Virginia was the one! The perfect match. He loved her so much! I truly miss them both!
