WATERS, Virginia, PhD, joined her heavenly family on December 6, 2022, at the age of 76. Virginia was a vibrant soul who helped countless friends, family, clients, and members of the community find happiness throughout her 46-year career as a practicing psychologist. Virginia would be the first to remind us that as we begin our journey remembering her, we must continue to discover joy in our everyday lives. Virginia was born on July 5, 1946, to Richard Duer Waters and Sally Waters (neé Vass) in New York, NY. After graduating Bayside High School, Virginia attended Finch College before obtaining her doctorate in psychology from Columbia University's Teacher School. Virginia spent her life helping people, particularly those suffering from grief. Her effectiveness came from experience — both personal and professional. As a psychologist in New York and New Jersey for 46 years, Virginia participated on numerous boards, including the New York State Psychological Association (Member of the Presidential Task Force on Grief & Loss During Covid-19), Society for Prescribing Psychology (President, 2018) during which she lobbied congress to allow psychologists to prescribe medication, and the New Jersey Academy of Medical Psychologists (Board of Directors). For over 20 years, she also ran grief support groups alongside Patti Williams, R.N., at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford. Virginia devoted her career to supporting hundreds of individuals in finding their purpose while celebrating their self-worth. Virginia was also known as "Ginger" to her family. She and her husband, Sidney "Sid" George Dashevsky, welcomed their first child, Adam Michael Waters-Dashevsky, on December 14, 1981. In a cosmic coincidence, Ginger was fortunate to share this auspicious occasion with her sister, Suzanne Smirnoff, who gave birth to her third child, Christie, on the same day and within the same hour. On July 2, 1984, Ginger and Sid added to their family with the birth of their daughter, Hallie Sarah Waters-Dashevsky. Both Adam and Hallie embodied Ginger's creativity and vitality throughout their lives and reflected Ginger's loving spirit. In addition to the vibrant community she created throughout her life, Virginia is survived by her siblings, Richard Duer Waters, Jr. and Suzanne Waters Smirnoff; nieces Stacy, Christie and Cindy; nephews George and Trey; grandnieces/nephews Jake, Kellie, Cassie, Ward and Lyle; step-daughters Anne and Karen; Mark Cannon, her pillar of support for over 30 years, and her beloved dogs Ollie, Dex, Tank, and Loki. A celebration of Virginia's life will begin at 11:00AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford on January 7th, 2023, with a reception to follow. In remembrance of Virginia's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Gray Memorial Funeral Home, Cranford, NJ. I've been thinking about Dr Waters these last few days. About how gentle & helpful she was to me. I knocked over an angel figurine she gave me & I thought how wonderful it would be to talk to her again. I'm so thankful for this reminder.

I visited Dr. Waters with a friend, having just been through a very serious operation for a condition that could have killed me & resulting medical complications that kept me in the hospital & rehab for more than two months. During this time, I lost most of the sight in my one good eye because of severe cataracts.

I had an opportunity to have an operation to have the cataract removed & an interocular lens put in. I was terrified to go through with it, as I had 2 eye operations when I was 3 & 6 years old that left me severely traumatized.

Dr. Waters gave me the courage to go through with this operation. My sight is now nearly perfect. Before I was having difficulty seeing with 18 diopter glasses. Now I don't need glasses at all to read even fine print--Bob M, Union County

Dr. Water´s has been my psychologist for a year and what i will miss most about her is her positivity and always willing to see the good in people even if they struggle to notice it in themselves. I also enjoyed discussing ideas about the world. Occasionally she would recommend certain books and was willing to breakdown the content of each book into simple terms. I will never forget the week before her death she informed me that she would have to cancel our appointment and I sent her a message saying that I hope the lord continues to keep her healthy and strong and that was the last message that she was able to read from me and I´m happy that I gave her a positive message before her departure from this world. Thank you Dr. Virginia for believing in me and giving me the tools to carve my own path in the world.

Virginia has been friends with my family for decades. She was my grandmother's friend and therapist, my mom's friend and therapist, and then my friend and therapist. She had an incredible way to reframe every challenging experience with a positive outlook. She helped me to keep going during the hardest parts of my medical training, and in that way, every patient I help is in part thanks to Virginia.

I had the privilege of meeting Virginia at a very dark time in my life. Thru many conversations she helped me in more ways I ever expected. She was also a client when she going thru chemotherapy and needed a wig. All the ways we were brought together the opportunity to help others was visible. Rest in peace you were a one of a kind

Dr. Waters was a special person, with her humor, her candor and her kindness. She was my therapist for several years and is truly missed, for her charm, intelligence and insights. She reached out. She empathized. She was great. As the Greeks say, "May her memory be eternal."

Hello Virginia - I prepared a note but not sure I clicked the right button and don´t know where it went, maybe to tech Heaven lol
You will always be with me. As a West Point Graduate and a young restless Army officer going through many changes, it was my good fortune to meet you in 1976. Rational Emotive Institute. Why I might have been one of your guest patients!!!
Since then you have been my therapist, mentor and friend. I´m so glad I was wise enough to send you an occasional treat from Harry And David`s and/or a flower company. And since we both believe in the continuity of life, I´ll continue to send you a few cookies, daisies and/or photographs. Both of us loved and love to share our photos and I remember some of yours from the (?) Raritan River.
Others have and will note your many gifts of spirit as you touched so many lives! One
"thing" that will stand out for me are your poignant reminders to get out of my head and into my heart and into the present moment!
Blessings - so many you have given!

Virginia was my first supervisor when I was a doctoral student at Rutgers in the early 2000s. She was kind, warm, structured, knowledgeable, generous, and wise. I now supervise many psychologists, social workers, and other professionals, and I draw on what I learned from her every day. I strive to continue her good work, and I have no doubt that it continues through many others, as well. May her memory be for a blessing, and I hope her family finds comfort in all of the warm and inspiring memories that Virginia left for us.

We are so sad to hear about Virginia. She was my angel when I needed her most. I will never forget her and how she helped us through the beginning stages of our darkest time. We didn't know her very long. We started meeting with her in September but We bonded quickly and she understood me so well. She will be very missed. Thank you Virginia for at least giving me the foundation to heal somewhat.

I did not know Virginia well, but in my brief exposures to her on professional committees over many years I was truly impressed by her enormous intellect, tireless energy, and her energetic and positive spirit. I was truly saddened to hear of her death. While those closest to her will surely miss her the most, and in ways we will not fathom, her colleagues and the profession of psychology will be diminished without her brilliance.

My sympathy to Virginia's family. I had the pleasure of knowing Virginia for about 15 years during monthly meetings, along with Ed Korber. We shared a love of psychopharmacology, singing about this topic together

I have been a colleague of Dr. Waters in Division 55 of the APA and also as a liaison between that division and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). In all my discussions with Dr. Waters, I found her to be kind, thoughtful, supportive, creative, warm, and above all, having such a positive attitude that was so infectious. She was always so full of energy and looking for opportunities to be helpful, especially to students and early career psychologists. Her resilience was impressive and her charm was disarming. She was overflowing with ideas and had an encyclopedic memory of key resources. I always looked forward to seeing her and having chats and discussions with her. She will be missed by so many, including her colleagues and the organizations of which she was a valuable member and leader. My sincere condolences to her family and close friends.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Virginia for a few years but what a pleasure it was to get to know her. She was such an astute, vibrant, and wonderful person, who always had a kind and positive word for anyone she met. I will so miss her affirming presence at our meetings and hope memories of her and her passion for her profession are a comfort to her family and all who knew and will miss her.
