Vito Candela Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 20, 2020.
Vito Candela MERCERVILLE Vito Candela, 82, of Mercerville, and formerly of Lawrenceville, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, Trenton. Born in Carini, Sicily, Italy, he immigrated to the United States in 1960. He had brief stay in Brooklyn, NY. He moved to Lawrence Twp. in 1969 where both he and his wife, Rosalia, raised their family. He started a restaurant business with family, originally named Peter Brother's Pizzeria. Vito, along with his wife, were the proprietors of Candela's Restaurant on Lawn Park Avenue until his retirement at 63 years old in 2001. He came out of retirement to work for the Trenton Parking Authority for 10 years. He was a longtime parishioner at The Church of St. Ann and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Some of his hobbies included gardening, making wine with his grandchildren and sons-in-law, and he cherished his pasta Sundays with his family. He also loved watching international soccer and formula one racing. He was thrilled when the Italian National Soccer Team won the World Cup. As an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, he was happy to witness them win a Superbowl and World Series. He enjoyed traveling to Brigantine, NJ, in the summertime and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a strong supporter of our soldiers and veterans. Predeceased by his parents, Francesco and Francesca Candela, and his brother, Giuseppe Candela, he is survived by his devoted wife, Rosalia Candela; his loving children and their spouses, Francesco "Frank" Candela, Francesca and Dean McDonald, Pietro "Pete" and Lisa Candela, and Rosalia and William Sponsel; his adoring grandchildren, Sara Rose McDonald, Gregory Reese McDonald, Ava Rose Candela, William "Joseph" Sponsel, Vito Giovanni Candela, and Elena Rose Sponsel; four siblings, Gaetano "Tommy" Candela of Lynbrook, NY, Vincenzo Candela of Carini, Sicily, Italy, Anna Merendino of Carini, Sicily, Italy, and Antonino Candela of Carini, Sicily, Italy; many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. I first met Vito when I was a freshman at Rider College in 1977. I only knew him as "The Hoagie Man". Vito would come through the halls of the dorms around midnight (knowing the on campus Pub had just closed and the undergrads probably had the munchies:)) yelling "Hoagie Man!", carrying a box of 6" hoagies he was selling for $1.00 each. Needless to say he sold out every night! He would have his 9 year old son Pete stay locked in the car guarding the additional sandwiches because "you can't trust these crazy college kids"

Fast forward 33 years and, as fate would have it, I began working with the Candela family restaurant through my marketing business. When I realized Vito was the famous Hoagie Man from all those years ago I couldn't believe it. We had some great laughs reminiscing about the "good old days" while we were sitting at the table in the restaurant on Lawn Park ave.
Vito always made me feel welcome, and a member of his family.
I will miss you Mr. Candela. May God welcome you with open arms.

Mr. Vito Candela and family created one of our favorite restaurants. For my wife and me it was the original family restaurant. Going to Candelas was like actually going to Vito's home for dinner. Vito's sons, Frank and Pete continue the excellent traditions. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, the service is great and the food is always so delicious. May you rest in Peace Mr. Vito Candela. Bless you sir.

So sad to hear of your dads death. He was an amazing and wonderful man who loved his family and worked hard to raise a family and run a successful restaurant. I know his family will miss him and his grandchildren will gave wonderful memories of the times they spent at the family restaurant. I loved seeing the grandchildren at the restaurant. We were customers at the restaurant for over 45 years. I will remember your family in my prayers. Carol and Bruce Jefferson
