Viva's picture is still on my bulletin board! When I see it I always think of our days as roommates in the Blood Brain Barrier Disruption program at OHSU!

Ramona & Family,

My name is Margaret Okel and I am Angela Long's assistant at CAF OPPR. I cannot express the profound sorrow I felt when I learned of your beautiful daughter, Viva's passing. There are no words that I or anyone can say right now that will comfort you. I had the pleasure of meeting Viva when you were the DHS CAF Assistant Director.

I know that many have and will come forward during this time of such great sorrow, but in the days and months ahead yu will need all the strength you have to survive this terrible personal loss. If there is anything that I can do to help you, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Viva was a beautiful, extremely bright, talented and courageous young woman. I have a daughter the same age as Viva and while I cannot even imagine the pain you are feeling, I do know how much I love my child and how hard it would be to lose her.

Please know that you are not alone and that you are surrounded by a community of love. I am just one of many who care about you and your family.

With Deepest Sympathy,
Margaret Okel

I will carry the memory of the day Viva and I spent together in McMinnville in July with me for the rest of my life. My baby, Anna was crying and Viva made up this silly song and dance to cheer her up. That was Viva- always laughing even when she was in pain. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Ramona:
My heart goes out to both you and Carl at this sad time! I think all of us who ever worked for DSS remember those wonderful "Viva Stories" you told us through the years.

From reading all the online notes, it is obvious she was a wonderful young lady with that same zest for life I know she must have inherited from you.

My thoughts and prayers will remain with you both as you go though the coming days.

I had the incredible privilege to work with Viva several years ago and to remain friends with her since then. Her bravery and optimism during her battle were truly remarkable. Her amazing spirit lives on within everyone who had the good fortune to have known her. She will be dearly missed. My deepest condolences to the family of this wonderful person.

Ramona and Carl, we send you all our sympathies on your tragic loss. Viva was known by everybody at DSS through your wonderful stories of her escapades. This has to be one of the most difficult things in life to endure. Our thoughts and concern are with you.

The loss of this amazing person is a loss for not only those that loved her, but for everyone who ever lived in a community that she inhabited, and for those in the future that would have benefited from her exaltingly positive contributions to this world. I was a classmate of Viva's at Dreher high school, and though she was a couple years ahead of me in school, we always sat next to each other in the classes that we shared and commiserated over the follies of our peers and ourselves. Her vitality for all that is good in this world truly cannot be overestimated. While she moved to Boston and I moved to Chicago for college, we would continue to see each other at xmas breaks when we could. I had no idea where she was when I started thinking about her out of the blue from my home in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago, so news of her death came as a real shock to me. I miss her, and I regret the fact that the future can only remember her. She was a remarkable person. I know she wouldn't want any of us mourning her with only sadness, so I'll do my best to perk up in the face of life's obstacles, in honor of Viva.

There are know words that I can ever express that would sum up just exactly what Viva ment to me nor can I attempt to wrap my brain around the emotions of a child lost and the pain that it causes. All I can say is that "those who were loved by Viva felt it and those who knew Viva felt her strength". Viva will be greatly missed. And in this heavy hour, my thoughts and prayers are filled, in which I greatly give to her family.

Viva was a lovely, lovely girl and I was honored to know her. I met her through the Salem music community- she loved music and was so encouraging and supportive. There are many people who will miss her!
She had this great optimism and vitality that was really quite inspiring to be around, and was without a doubt the most intelligent woman I have ever met. I am grateful to have known her, and will try to learn from the great examples she set.

In many ways Viva and I were complete opposites, but that made our friendship much closer and important to me. Viva inspired and challenged me every day. I will miss her greatly, but I'm sure she knows that I will never forget her.

Ramona, Tim Cash shared this website with me and it is heartbreaking to learn of the loss of Viva. I remember when she was born and how proud you were of her. We lost one of my nephews at age 20 and so we know what it's like to have a young person gone suddenly and not being able to see them blossom forth to their true potential. And Viva obviously had the potential to soar to the stars. You and your family are in my prayers.

Viva and I met when we were roommates at OHSU in the Blood Brain Barrier Disruption program. We continued our friendship through phone calls and emails when we weren't at OHSU. She was the most positive person I knew - even when the cancer cells went to her spine she felt the radiation would do its job. Viva lit up a room. Viva was loved by the nurses and staff on 5A and the BBBD team at OHSU. I will miss my friend.

Viva...her name truly says it all. I met Viva my first year of law school. Her vibrant personality and colorful humor stood out from the start. I can honestly say I will never know another human being with so much life and love for everyone around her. Viva's friendship was always there when needed through both the good and tough times. I truly feel I am a better person for knowing her and I will miss her tremendously.

Viva was an amazing woman. She was positive and inspirational about life. I will never forget her and everything she taught me in the short time I knew her. She showed me that life is something you should cherish and never take for granted. No matter what was going on in her life she was always excited to just be alive. She annoyed me to no end sometimes with how endlessly positive she was but that is something I admire and will never forget. I believe she lived her life to it's fullest and got what she wanted out of it. I think we could all learn something from her.

Viva was a law student clerking for me when she became ill. She was intelligent, articulate, and a pleasure to work with. Her gratitude and optimism through her illness were an example and a lesson I hope to take on board. Viva was on track to make a very important contribution to the legal profession and to her community. My very deepest sympathy to her family. I share in your loss.
