CLEMMONS - Mrs. Vivian Sidden Phelps Sloan, 88, went home to rest on Aug. 17, 2003. She was a resident of Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons, formerly of Gordon Drive, Winston-Salem. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Sloan was a homemaker and loved to crochet and do needle work. She was born March 20, 1915, in Davie County, to Burt and Lucy Hudson Sidden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas A. "Jack" Phelps Sr.; second husband, Lester H. Sloan; two daughters, Ruby Phelps and Roberta Brown Moore; three sisters; and a brother. Survivors include a son, T.A. Phelps Jr. and wife, Shirley of Lewisville; three stepsons and their wives, James and Shelby Sloan of Mocksville, Jack and Glenda Sloan of Ramseur, and Ray and Dianne Sloan of Winston-Salem; two step-daughters and their husbands, Sarah and Jim Doby of Winston-Salem, and Mary Ann and Tommy Watkins of Clemmons; five grandchildren Phyllis Hundley and husband, Steve, Thomas A Phelps III and wife, Michelle, Donna Spurlock and husband, Scott, Jackie Tetreault and husband, Don, and John "M.G." Brown IV and wife, Shannon; 10 step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Sloan's son, T.A. Phelps Jr. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Danny Hauser officiating. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mocks United Methodist Church Graveyard Fund, 523 Beauchamp Road, Advance, NC 27006. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Chapel is directing the arrangements for Mrs. Sloan.
