Irina and Alex/Sasha, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You were all dear friends so long ago and I never forgot Vladimir's stories that connected us. I am at a loss for words at this unexpected news.

Dear Irina and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and that you had to endure this tragedy in such a manner. Your lives have been filled with wonderful memories and I can only hope they, and time, will ease the pain. Vladimir did a lot of good in the world, much more than most people on this earth do, so lets all be thankful that we knew him.

I met Vladimir in 1994, when I was just a kid out of engineering school, and we worked together for more than ten years. The first business trip I ever took was a week on the road with Vladimir. The dinner conversation wasn't much to start, but we warmed up to each other a little by the end of the week, when we found out we had a common affection for Jean Claude Van Damme movies.
He told me once that when he was a young man, his great dream was to be a submariner, but that the injury to his leg kept him from realizing that dream, and he added that most of us do not get to realize our great dream, but we go on anyway.
I learned a lot from interacting with Vladimir. We disagreed from time to time on technical/engineering issues, but I think that was an education for me that there is more than one right way to do most things in life.
He came in, and worked hard every day. I will miss you, Vladimir. I consider myself lucky to have known you. My heart goes to your family,
