In Loving Memory of Dr. Vladimir Munk: A Remarkable Life of Resilience and Inspiration

Plattsburgh, New York - October 2, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Vladimir Munk, a beloved figure in the Plattsburgh community and beyond. Born in Pardubice, Czech Republic, on February 27th, 1925, he peacefully departed from this world at the age of 98 on September 30, 2023, in the comfort of his home at Lake Forest.

Dr. Munk's life was a testament to the indomitable human spirit. He was the loving husband of the late Kitty Munk nee Lowi, and the son of Karel Munk and Hermina Munk nee Geschmai of Pardubice, Czech Republic. His early years were filled with fond memories of his homeland, but his journey took a harrowing turn during World War II when his family was forced from their home, enduring incarceration in Theresienstadt Ghetto and the horrors of Auschwitz. Tragically, his family did not survive the atrocities they faced.

Liberated from a death march at the war's end, Vladimir returned to Prague, where he pursued his passion for knowledge. He earned his doctorate in Microbiology and Biochemistry, a testament to his resilience and thirst for learning. His dedication to scientific excellence led to the award of a prestigious State Prize for his groundbreaking work in fermentation and genetic engineering.

In 1968, the Russian invasion of his homeland prompted his journey to the United States. Here, he embraced a new chapter as a full professor at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, teaching Microbiology and Biochemistry for over two decades. His impact on generations of students was immeasurable, with many remaining in contact with him throughout their lives.

Upon retiring, Vladimir Munk dedicated himself to Holocaust education, sharing his firsthand experiences with students in upstate New York. His remarkable journey to Auschwitz at the age of 95 was documented in the moving and Emmy-award winning film, "Return to Auschwitz: Survival of Vladimir Munk," leaving an indelible mark on those who heard his story.

Dr. Munk's interests were as diverse as his life experiences. He shared his passion for wine as a wine-tasting course instructor, led the kennel club as its president, authored a book on dog training, cultivated prize-winning roses, and delighted friends and family with his skill for baking delicious bread.

He is survived by two sons, Peter and Paul Munk, and their spouses, Sheila Munk and Alice Peterson, as well as his grandchildren, Matthew, Julia, David, and Henry Munk, and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Jacob. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and countless devoted friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Rebecca Boire West for her unwavering compassion, friendship, and care, particularly during Vladimir's final days.

Dr. Vladimir Munk's legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. His life journey inspires us to overcome adversity, cherish every moment, and strive for excellence in all our endeavors. He will be deeply missed, and his spirit will forever illuminate our lives.

I watched the movie about his return to Auschwitz . His professional achievements amazed me. His son Paul is a friend who has broad interests and achievements and looks like a younger version of his Father!

My grandfather seemed larger than life to so many. He was a renowned scientist, educator and community leader. But I will always remember his joy the first time he made his great grandson smile.

Something interesting Vladimir said recently - "after working my whole career in science, if I'm known for anything in my life, it's probably going to be for being a Holocaust survivor. "
Educating others so that another Holocaust never happens is not a bad legacy, I'd say.
