WORKMASTER
WALLACE F.
Age 82, of Mount Lebanon, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Family Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Mount Lebanon, PA. Wally was born March 29, 1934, in Mount Lebanon, the son of Harry C. and Dorothy (Root) Workmaster. After graduating from Mount Lebanon High School in 1951, he went on to develop his deep passion for history at Penn State, graduating with degrees in the field in 1955 (bachelor's) and 1957 (master's). Wally married Joan M. Allen on June 13, 1959. In 1960, Wally became the site curator and historian at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego, NY. He devoted up to 30 years of his career developing "The Fort" and other central NY sites into popular museum destinations. Wally retired in 1995, as Manager of the Palisades and Taconic Regions State Historic Sites, based in Bear Mountain, NY. He returned to his hometown and soon became active in the local history scene, notably reviving the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon and co-founding the Mount Lebanon Historic Preservation Board, and continued his lifelong love of both real and model railroads. Wally was proud of and loved his family and is survived by children, Wallace, Jr. of Queens, NY, Douglas (Uriel Sandoval) of Sausalito, CA, and Beth Ann (Linda Crubaugh) of Madison, WI; granddaughter and great-grandson, Stephanie (Andrew) and Mason Andujar of East Stroudsburg, PA; and wife, Joan of Rochester, NY. A memorial service will be held in Mount Lebanon at the convenience of the family (TBA). Contributions in memory of Wally and his commitment to local history, historic preservation, and history education may be made to The Historical Society of Mount Lebanon's current capital campaign for the restoration of the McMillan House which will be established as their new History Center, www.lebohistory.org/capital- campaign/campaign-brochure/
