MERIDEN - Walter E. Akerberg Sr., 63, husband of Patricia M. (Boyd) Akerberg, died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 12, 1947, he was the son of the late Walter B. and Elma M. (Seaholm) Akerberg. A longtime Meriden resident, Mr. Akerberg was employed by the Specialty Cable and Wiring in Wallingford and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. Mr. Akerberg enjoyed hiking and camping in Niantic and in Mystic and along the Atlantic coast. He was a member of the Watch Block Assoc. and the Quinnipiac River Watershed Assoc. Walter loved and cherished his family.

In addition to his beloved wife of 33 years Patricia, Walter is survived by his four sons, Walter E. Akerberg Jr. and his wife, Christy of Pennsylvania, Raymond K. Akerberg and his wife, Joanne, of Middletown, John L. Akerberg, of Meriden and Timothy A. Akerberg and his wife, Bethany, of Maine; two daughters, Cherie A. Akerberg, of East Hartford and Holly E. Akerberg, of Plainville, a sister, Kristine T. Norton, of Illinois; seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Dakota, Kyle, Kaleb, Avery, Terrance and Mariah; two nephews, a niece and a special family friend, Michael Palma, of West Hartford. Walter was predeceased by his sister, Alice Peraino.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 22, at 9:15 a.m. from the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Meriden. Burial will be private and at the convenience of his family. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects Wednesday, July 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home. Walt was a wonderful volunteer on behalf of restoration of the Quinnipiac River and its wildlife. He showed enthusiasm and joy working alongside other volunters, and especially loved working with young people. Mary Mushinsky, QRWA
