Walter Dobrian Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2025.
Walter Anton Dobrian passed away peacefully in his California home on August 30, 2025 at the age of 95. Walter, known to his childhood friends and family as Tony, was born April 23, 1930 in Gary, Indiana to Polish immigrants Joseph and Angeline Dobrian. He attended Los Angeles City College and transferred to the University of Wisconsin, where he received his BA, MA, and Ph.D., specializing in French and Spanish language and literature. There he met fellow graduate student Louise Lindquist of Iowa City, Iowa, whom he married in 1953. Together they had four children, Joseph, Christopher, Amy, and Mary. After Louise's death of cancer in 1979, Walter married Susan Lucas in 1983, and together they had two children, Tristan and Kasia. In addition to his six children, he had four grandchildren-Oliver Dobrian, Pascal Shrady, Louisa Shrady, and Erin Partridge.

Between his bachelor's and master's degrees, Walter studied at the Université de Paris-Sorbonne, and he served honorably in the United States Army and the Naval Reserve. He completed his master's degree in 1957, and while finishing his Ph.D. he joined the faculty of the department of Romance Languages at Dartmouth College in 1960. In 1963 he became a faculty member in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa, where he taught for 43 years, personally mentoring countless students. He is the author of Conversational Spanish and Español: Segundo Curso, two textbooks widely used in Spanish language courses in the 1970s, and he published in-depth analyses of Spanish poetry in Poesía Española: Neoclasicismo y Romanticismo, Poesía Española: Maestros del Modernismo, and Bécquer: Sus Rimas Analizadas. He retired with his wife Susan and their children to Aliso Viejo, California in 2006.

Walter's family, friends, students, and colleagues will all remember him with greatest affection, as a man of honesty, integrity, kindness, generosity, and a joyful sense of humor. He devotedly cared for his wife Louise during her protracted illness, a devotion and care equaled by his wife Susan during his own gradual demise. His penchant for poetry doubtless inspired his legendary love of wordplay, puns, and spoonerisms, with which he frequently amused those around him. And he often ruminated on his great good fortune to have had such close and loving relationships with his family and friends.

I had Doctor Dobrian as my teacher for several Spanish courses while I was a TA and studying for my MA in 1966-68. He was an excellent teacher and a wonderful person. His inspiration carried to my classroom as a high school Spanish teacher. I will never forget him.

I knew Dr. Dobrian when I was a doctoral student at the University of Iowa in the late 60s. As I was not in his field of expertise, I never took a class with him but spoke with him many times in and out of his office. I sought him out when I needed a friendly face with whom to share my anxieties about my studies, about the Vietnam War, and about the Civil Rights Movement. He was kind, unassuming, and welcoming. May he rest in eternal peace. Thank you, Dr. Dobrian!

I knew Walter when I was student in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Iowa during the 1960s. He was unfailingly kind to me and always had time to chat. I liked him a lot. He was a great professor and an exemplary person.

More than anyone else, Tony Dobrian served as an inspirational strength in our extended family. While he wasn´t the first of us to escape the limited horizons of working in the local steel mill; his values, beliefs, and aspirations greatly influenced all those around him. He emphasized the positive aspects of life, championed fairness, believed in the fundamental goodness of humanity, and cherished the supportive bonds of family and friends. With a few short personal examples below, I´ll try to convey at least some of what Uncle Tony gave to me during my formative years.
One of my earliest memories of Uncle Tony occurred during my first ride as a passenger on a bicycle. Uncle Tony had a bike with a wire basket attached to the handle bars, and I was small enough (perhaps 3 years old) to comfortably fit into that basket. During that ride we sped down small hill on Connecticut Street in Gary, Indiana, and I absolutely loved the thrill and excitement of that adventure.
Another simple event illustrates the kindness and personal interest in others that characterized Uncle Tony. While he was stationed in Germany in the 1950s, he sent me a postcard describing some of the geography and history of the local area. As an 11-year-old kid, I felt extremely privileged and honored to have received such an important document--from a foreign country, no less!
Uncle Tony also showed his sensitivity to me by jump-starting my love of reading. While I was still pretty young, he introduced me to McWhinney´s Jaunt, The Spirit of St. Louis, and Don Quixote. Uncle Tony took the time to discover what my interests were, and at the same time tried to introduce the concepts of justice, curiosity, and adventure through the various books that he gave to me. To this day I sometimes think about passages in Cervantes or Lindbergh that take me back to the days of that pre-adolescent kid
One of the many traditions of a 3-generation family in the early 1950s involved a friendly football game at Thanksgiving. Along with Uncle Tony and cousins Jerry, Patsy, and Jackie, we would gather outside to work up an appetite before dinner. On one of these occasions Uncle Tony was really sick with the flu, but nevertheless succumbed to our insistent pestering him to join us in play. In previous years he invariably soundly defeated "the cousin´s team", but this year he just couldn´t muster enough energy to push through being sick and deal with us youngsters. After it was over, he celebrated with us, and allowed us to believe that we had won the equivalent of the Super Bowl.
In so many ways Uncle Tony presented qualities that encouraged and energized me as well as other members of our extended family. He led by example, always emphasizing what was honorable, positive, and good. He also celebrated the closeness of family while at the same time valued personal initiative and independence. He gave back to the community through a vibrant professional life, yet did not neglect those dear to him. He truly was a very special person. (Attached photo taken at Christmas, 1943).
