Urbanna - Walter Boyd "Walt" Hurley, Jr., 58, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at his home in Urbanna. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth Ellen, of twenty-six years, and his father and mother Walter Boyd Hurley, Sr. and his wife Margaret. He is survived by his two daughters, Rachel Virginia and Sarah Grace; and one son, Walter Boyd III "Trip"; parents Rachel Packett and W.D. Edwards Jr. of Saluda; and a very dear sister Donna Hurley (Dennis) Williams of Saluda; and sisters Susan Fowler of Urbanna and Lisa Foster of Locust Hill; and two brothers-in-law William D. (Jennifer) Edwards III of Warner and James R. (Rebecca) Edwards of Saluda; one niece, Kaitlin; and five nephews, Michael, Marshall, Randy, Andy and Quincy Edwards; five grandnieces, Sadie Vance, Ruth Ellen Christian "Rece," Anne Roberts, Lacey Paige, and Ava James Edwards; one grandnephew Jacob Edwards; Bitsy Bristow and the late Charles Bristow. He attended Christchurch School, Randolph Macon Military Academy, and graduated from James Madison University with a B.A. in History in 1981. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Lambda Sigma Chapter. Growing up in Urbanna, Walt spent his childhood at the family marina, and became proficient in boating at a very young age. His family has deep roots in Urbanna in many different industries, and he was very proud to come home and spend his life giving back to the community from which he came. He served his community as an integral member of the Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation, Urbanna Masonic Lodge, and also served on the board of directors for Colonial Virginia Bank. He enjoyed attending various worship services throughout the community. As a member of the Ocean City Light Tackle Club, he enjoyed taking time off to travel with Ruth Ellen and friends. Some of his greatest offshore fishing adventures included Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama, to name a few. When it came to business, he was a visionary in the field of outdoor recreation and campground management. With humble dedication and creativity, he built a thriving business from the ground up. He strove to take advantage of every opportunity, and instilled in his children the same attitude towards life. One of his greatest business accomplishments was having Bethpage Camp-Resort in Urbanna named Mega Park of the Year three times by ARVC. Other business associations that he was a member of include IAAPA and the Virginia Campground Association. He will be remembered for his passion for the preservation and restoration of history, evident through his dedication to Hewick Plantation, love of friends, the river, his dogs, Rudy, Willie, Lilly Belle, and his faithful companion Sam. Although his work endeavors were many, he remained steadfast in his love for and dedication to his family. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at Saluda Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: RE Strong, P.O. Box 178, Urbanna, Va. 23175.

Im so sorry for your loss I heard so many wonderful things about your dad from brenda when she would bring his cloths in for cleaning at swans..I only wish I would have had the opportunity to meet him..Take peace in knowing that he's with your mother now live on through their memories and continue to make them proud...As Tim mcgraw said, live like you were dying...make everyday count Im sure that's what he would want for the two of you..

I knew Walt through his involvement in the VA Campground Association and the Natl Assn of RV Parks & Campgrounds. He was an outstanding businessman, a warm and friendly person and a devoted family man. He was a pleasure to work with and I learned much from our relationship.
Walt, you'll be missed by an entire industry and I know your family and friends will mourn your passing for years to come.

My condolences to your children and entire family. May you rest in peace for eternity.

My connection with Walt probably goes back further than almost anyone else's, but I may be mistaken. I worked summer jobs for this dad at Urbanna Boat & Motor in Urbanna while in high school. He would come and hang around his dad, frequently on Fridays which was our payday. He was only 5 or 6 at that time. If anyone is alive that worked there knows that Walter Boyd was slow to turn over that paycheck. Little Walt was too young to get involved with the repair of boats at that time, but in the following years he learned a lot of business sense from his dad but refined that many times over in the future which enabled him to become the most successful native Middlesex businessman . But he didn't flash it in your face. His smile was always there. He and Ruth Ellen lived across the street from us in Laurel Hill in Urbanna for many, many years. He built it and still owns it. RE was my daughter's second mom. Fortunately, being only 100' or so from our respective decks, we sipped a few on each other's deck. My wife Jane, & I were so sorry to see them move out of the neighborhood, but his success allowed him to get probably the best view of the Rappahannock in the county. RE deserved it. As she was dying in the hospital, I went to her room where Walt was. It wasn't easy, but I felt so good that he needed my shoulder to cry on knowing what was about to happen. I need such a shoulder right now myself. I will be missing you Walt.

Simply an amazing family man! Although our relationship was brief he impacted my life. Our friendship began over JMU Athletics and his support for JMU was unwavering. I feel for his family and will continue to pray for them.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hurley through BethPage. He was definitely a business man whose goal was to make families happy. He was very friendly and will be greatly missed. We are so saddened by his untimely death. Our deepest sympathies to his children and family.
