Walter Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 15, 2025.
Las Cruces - Walter B. Miller Jr., 92, of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away on July 9, 2025, in Las Cruces, NM.

Walter was born in Sweetwater, Tennessee, to Walter B. Miller Sr. and Bonnie Mae Wade. Walt, a Korean War veteran, served as a medic. He taught mountain and cold weather operations while based in Alaska. After his service, Walter financed his college education by working in the Alaskan gold mines.

Walt received his doctorate in mathematics from New Mexico State University in 1968. He then began a forty-year career at White Sands Missile Range as a Research Mathematician. His contributions to mathematical analysis and atmospheric science earned him many awards. In 1982, he received the Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Service Award. A 1990 Honor Roll Award recognized his "exceptional scientific achievement."

After retirement, Walter and his wife, Miriam (Mimi), journeyed extensively across the globe. Walt was an avid scuba diver and underwater photographer, publishing photographs on his website, Ramblincameras.com. His website was an early source of free educational material for the fledgling internet.

Walt always had his nose in a book and could quote all his favorite limericks (and Shakespeare!) at the drop of a hat. When he was not reading poetry, he wrote it. He played classical guitar with a fondness for Mexican and Russian folk music. Walter's kindness, generosity, and wit brought joy to many. We will deeply miss him.

Walter is survived by his wife Miriam Miller and his daughter Lori. His parents preceded him in death.

I met Walt and Mimi while on the Cayman Diver. At the end of their second trip they invited me to visit them in Las Cruces. I did and they took me diving in Mexico as well as numerous trips photographing the desert around Las Cruces. After a year or two Walt suggested that I move out and go to grad school in Las Cruces. Walt´s generosity shaped my career and life. I´m forever thankful.

I had the great privilege of knowing Walt as a colleague, friend, and mentor during the many years I lived and worked in the peaceful beauty of southern New Mexico. The time we spent together-hiking the Organ Mountains, sharing stories, and enjoying a beer-will always remain with me. My thoughts are with you, Mimi and Lori. I miss Walt deeply, and I miss all of you.

I have fond memories of working with Walt during the early 1990s at the Army Research Labs. Both being mathematicians, we thought alike on our joint research on laser propagation. My wife and I also enjoyed our boating trips and picnics with Walt and Mimi. Great times!
