Wonderful person. Ward and I were close friends at Lehigh. We both played clarinet and were members of the faculty orchestra.

I was a physics graduate student at UT in the early 90s and had Dr. Kincaid for the numerical computing class that used the book which Doctors Cheney & Kincaid co-authored. I suppose that's how I knew the 60-something gentleman who bicycled all around campus was Dr. Cheney. He was something of an inspiration that way, making me think: "Well, perhaps I can still be biking when I'm in my 60's". God Bless,

I will always remember Ward for his help in the struggle to make the Mathematics Department better and develop an up tp date program. He worked with those trying to replace the leadership of the department and wanted things put in written form. I have admired him greatly. Don Edmondson

I was a graduate student in mathematics at U.T. 1969 - 1974 with an office just down the corridor from Dr. Cheney. Our paths next crossed 41 years later when my wife Sue at the end of her eight years of early on-set Alzheimer's came to a care facility where again Dr. Cheney had a room near-by, with a copy of his ground-breaking text on approximation theory in a place of honor in the glass cabinet outside his door. That is when I got to know Virginia Cheney for nine months and observed first hand her tender and intelligent care for Ward as she kindly showed me the "institutional" routine and we shared time assisting our spouses at breakfast or lunch or dinner. My Sue died six months ago. Virginia attended Sue's memorial, again sensitive and thoughtful. I am sad Ward's passing becomes the occasion for my thanking her for such concern for this stranger at a time of need. She was for Ward a blessing. I wish her and Dr. Cheney's family peace in this time of sadness.
