GREENSBORO — Watson Stoessel "Sto" Fox, Jr. died November 2, 2012 after a courageous fight with cancer. Sto was born July 19, 1941 in Blacksburg, SC to the late Mary Lewis Doster Fox Danieley and Watson Stoessel Fox, Sr.
Sto Fox grew up in Greensboro, NC where he graduated from Greensboro High School in 1959 and then attended his beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! He served in the United States Air Force before coming home and beginning his professional career. He worked at Sedgefield Country Club and later worked in the family business his father started, Fox Cleaners. In March of 1969, Sto and the late Gail Sandra Weber were married and so ensued a legacy of love. He also had a successful career as an employment recruiter while running Fox Cleaners which is still in business today.
Sto's passion for the Dry Cleaning industry eventually lead him to becoming the Executive Director of the North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners. During his leadership he helped to achieve many notable accomplishments. One of the most notable was the creation of the Dry Cleaners Trust fund (DCSCA) which continues today to help protect the environment and the existence of small business owners.
Sto's love for others was a trademark of his character. His traditional style of genuine hospitality coupled with his eccentric personality proved over time to be a lasting influence on the many lives he touched. He is survived by his five children: Daughter Ashley Fox Thompson and husband Shannon Thompson of Blowing Rock, NC, son Gregory Stoessel Fox of Greensboro, NC, daughter Brandon Fox of Greensboro, NC, daughter Lindsey Fox Beane and husband Perry Beane of Lenoir, NC, and daughter Brie Fox of High Point, NC, eight grandchildren: Makenzie Thompson, Ella Thompson, Addison Thompson, Sandra Beane, Colby Beane, Aiden Beane, Demetrius Butler and Cecilia Fox and cousin Jim Burton and wife Maryanne Burton of Bell Center, Ohio. Sto had an extended family that included many special friends. Many of which felt he was a father figure, mentor, and true friend. A celebration of his life will be held at Deep River Event Center in Greensboro, NC on Saturday, November 17 starting at 6 p.m. We will gather to toast and share special memories of life and laughter. In lieu of flowers, donations can be shared with the amazing Beacon Place and with Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro at 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405. Memorial contributions may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com

Sto and I became friends at Carolina. He was a leader in our fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha; and, we spent many hours together. I especially remember eating pizza and drinking beer together at the old Rathskellar on Friday afternoons, watching and listening as he led the 16-piece Sinfonians dance band, embarassing our friend Jim Finison by our over-the-top public behavior, and trips to the beach in his covertible. We always had a lot of fun.
I saw him only a few times after he graduated, but each time it was as if we were continuing a conversation begun the day before. I spent the night at his home once, before his wife died. His deep love for her was very clear.
Sto was irrascible, eccentric, unique, playful, clever, intelligent, thoughtful, and kind to everyone he met. He was my friend, and there's a hole in my universe where he used to be.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fox when he came to visit his daughter, Lindsey at ECU, who was my sister's roommate. He left a lasting impression. What a wonderful human being that will be sorely missed.

Sto, was a friend as far back as jr, High
days. When I was married Sto & wife lived for a short time a couple of houses
from me & my husband. Most recently I have passed Sto on my way to work and also, at Sears where he made at least one
purchase that I rang up for him. We always talked about GHS days and mutual friends.

When I was married, Sto & wife ended living on the same street as we did.

Sto was part of my growing up and I will always remember a certain incident...First Baptist teens went to Caswell with my partents, Mary Ella and H. P. Hammond as chaperones. We managed to find fireworks and Sto lit a cherry bomb and it exploded in his hand. I guess he forgot to throw it! My Dad was furious! What a character...I'm not surprised to find he was successful in so many ways. He was a great guy and I am so sorry for your loss...

I had the privilege of meeting Sto almost 20 years ago when he asked me to consider getting involved in the NCALC. What started out as a professional relationship turned into a good friendship, with many phone calls about dry cleaning, government and UNC athletics. Sto's passion for his family, business and friendships was evident to all who met him. I will truly miss him. My prayers go out to the family.

My heart and prayers go out to Sto's family in this very difficult time. Sto has been one of my best friends since childhood and I will never forget the 3 hours we spent in Feb. 2011 talking and laughing about our times together, playing in bands, beach trips, being room mates at UNC, and his knicker suits. He was a friend to everyone and loved by all that knew him. I thank him for all the wonderful memories that will continue to fill my heart. RIP my friend.

Brandon, I did not know your dad but after reading all these comments, I wish I had. We both went to Lindley Elementary and GHS. At any rate, I know he had to be special because you are! I still can't get over the fact that he raised five teenagers alone! That would have done in most people! Special wishes to you and your family! Cherish the good memories!

Sto,(and Gail)along with their amazing children, will hold a very special place in my heart forever. Sto took care of my twin sister and I like we were his own during a time in our young lives when our own father was absent. He is the reason I've been married to a wonderful family man for nearly 32 yrs. I will always remember his ability to be the calm in any storm, always positive. Thank you Sto. Thank you to his family for sharing your father. I love this family he and Gail created.

I am so sad to learn of Sto's passing. I have known him since we were 9 years old. I first met him when he walked into a church meeting and was wearing a very white suit.
