Arthur Woodward Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2011.
COLUMBIA - Lt. Col. Arthur Q. Woodward Jr., was born in Aiken, S.C., January 4, 1925, and died at his home in Columbia, S.C., August 16, 2011. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. Arthur Q. and Sarah Knox Woodward. Lt. Col. Woodward was a graduate of Aiken High School and Clemson University. He also held a master's degree in English from the University of Richmond. At graduation from Clemson as a distinguished ROTC scholar, he was made a second lieutenant in the Regular Army.

His service in the Armed Forces included being a togglier during WW II, making bombing raids over Germany. As an Ordinance officer he served at Redstone Arsenal during the development of America's space program. Later he saw service in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Rome, and Thailand, earning Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit.

Throughout the many moves of Army life, he maintained an extensive library. He passes on his love of reading and learning to his children and grandchildren. He was adept and ingenious at repair work and passed that on to his progeny also. Those who knew him will miss both his literary references and his plumbing advice.

Arthur was devoted to his wife of 63 years, Kathryn Johnson Woodward whom he met and admired in the second grade. His love of country was only exceeded by his love of family.

His family includes his wife Kathryn; daughter Kathryn C. Pu of Texas (Glen), granddaughters Yee Yee, Violet, and Quinn Pu; sons Arthur Q. III (Deborah) of Richmond, VA, and grandson Evan; George Burtson of San Diego (Gina), and son Christian; Sara Blanche Fella (Henry) of Fort Worth, Texas.

He attended Memorial Chapel at Fort Jackson and was a member of the Memorial Bible Study.

Visitation will be at Greenlawn Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2011, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
