Wayne Mortimer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 15, 2025.
Newbury - Michael Wayne Mortimer (known as Wayne) entered this world weighing in at 10 and a half pounds on his father's 30 birthday, December 12, 1961. Wayne left this world by his own hand following a period of deep challenge on a wooded trail in Southern New Hampshire on April 22, 2025. He was the youngest child of Olga (Lloyd) and Alfred C. Mortimer III (both deceased). Wayne was the brother of Susan, Jade (Beverly) and Glenn (deceased).

Wayne was a member of the class of 1978 at Billerica Memorial High School eventually receiving his GED a number of years later. As 'one of the boys' growing up on School Lane in Billerica, Wayne enjoyed a childhood of suburban 1960's and early 1970's being outdoors all day in summer returning home for dinner with many stories of adventures with his buddies. Playing street hockey on Knowles Drive, running a brakeless minibike down the dead end street, skating on the pond behind Grigg's store, riding his stingray bike miles from home, walking a mile to and from school in all kinds of weather, he wore his hockey uniform which included his mother's garter belt to hold up his long socks (all boys did that!) looked smart in his cub scout uniform, wore tube socks with short shorts and a tank top in the early 80's, was a big Bruins fan, drove a Datsun 280Z, a Jeep, a Harley Davidson, a Ford F-150 and bought a boat with a big Evinrude outboard motor, worked out in the gym developing a zero fat body of steel, he rode Motocross for years traveling to different tracks for events with friends....

His love for motocross included seeing local riders race at Southwick nationals every summer, traveling with friends to Florida, camping and riding in Croom, watching the pro's race at Gatorback in Gainesville and Daytona supercross in Florida. His other favorite tracks included Broome-Tioga in Binghamton and Unadilla in New Berlin NY.

Wayne loved the companionship of his dogs along with being outdoors, camping on land in Littleton NH he owned for a short while.

As a young man, Wayne helped run his father's tool store for a number of years. He became a truck driver (18 wheeler) for Fed-Ex and other long haul outfits. Wayne studied for years to learn the HVAC trade. He was hard working and meticulous in any endeavor.

Wayne was always quick with a joke to make you laugh, especially with old memories of the past. He was kind and had a generous heart, always helping others, lending a hand whenever needed.

Wayne was married for 25 years then divorced. He also leaves his good friend of over 30 years, Mike Thompson and his wife Tracie. We also think of Wayne's friend Jay. He leaves fond memories of friends from the old neighborhood and his cousins in Reynoldsville, New York. Though Wayne had lived in New Hampshire for many years and he recently moved back from Mexico, Billerica was always his home town.

There will be no service. We ask that those who knew and cared for Wayne pass on a gesture of kindness any time the opportunity arises and/or hoist a beer in his memory.

Wayne's remains have been cremated and his ashes will be spread among the places that brought him the greatest joy. He will be dearly missed by those who loved him.

I grew up right across the street from Wayne. I was a couple of years younger than Wayne so he was kind of like a big brother to me. I´ll always remember the good times we had as kids in the neighborhood... playing street hockey, hockey on Griggs pond, trips to Maine, riding our dirt bikes, motocross races, etc.. , hanging out with the other neighborhood kids... Jeff, Billy, Scott, and Kurt. and for the most part we stayed out of serious trouble.
This past March was the first time I saw Wayne in over 20 years. He took a trip with me up to my property in Maine where we cleared some fallen trees and limbs, then we had a good lunch at the kennebec tavern. We talked about old times, and had some good laughs, so this news was a real shock to me.
I hope Wayne is in a better place now, I´ll miss him. God bless.
