Wayne Ridenhour Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2023.
Philip Wayne Ridenhour of Concord passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 18, 2023. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ridenour, he was a bit of a surprise on November 21, 1940. His mother delivered a girl at home, and the doctor announced, "Oh my goodness, Lois. You're having twins! There's another one." After having three boys, Lois said, "Well, I had to have another boy to get my girl!"

Wayne was one of six children and was often referred to as the "Little Preacher." Originally, he thought seminary was his calling and attended two years of college at Lenoir-Rhyne University after graduating from Concord High School in 1959. There he was elected Chaplain of his freshman class. After returning from a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Wayne finished his BA degree in business administration from Pfeiffer College.

Wayne often spoke of his time serving his country. His stories of being stationed in Turkey and his flying in a Navy airplane performing Morse Code were some of his favorites to share.

In October 1966, Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Ann Barnhardt. Their love story is one for the ages! They were very active members at Calvary Lutheran Church, raised their girls together in Concord, and simply enjoyed family life.

Wayne had various jobs after college but was the proudest of owning the printing company, Action Screen Printing. He was a hard worker who never met a stranger, and was always welcoming with a smile and a joke. During retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family, talking with good friends on the phone, feeding the birds, taking care of his plants, watching his beloved westerns, and cheering on his favorite tennis players competing in the Grand Slams.

Wayne is survived by his daughters, Sylvia and husband, Chuck Saleeby, Janet Goodman; and three grandchildren, Eli, Anna Jean, and Maggie. He is also survived by his siblings, Gary Ridenhour, Elaine Foster, and Jane Goodman. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob and J.R. Ridenhour, and his wife, Ann B. Ridenhour.

A Celebration of Life gathering, and a family grave-side service will be planned in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be given to Gentiva Hospice Services: gentivahs.com
