Wellington Nemorn Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2024.
Wellington "Nemo" Smith was born on December 8, 1952, in Winter Garden, Florida to parents, Wellington Elgy Smith and Dorothy Mae Anderson. He graduated from Malcom X Shabazz High School in Newark, New Jersey. He went on to further his education and obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree from Stratford University in 2002.

Nemo enlisted in the United States Army in 1973 where he served as a military policeman. His military career afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the U.S., Germany, and Japan. During his military career he was an inspiration for many young soldiers and has maintained those relationships over the years. He was affectionately given the nickname of Soul Brother No. 1, which has followed him throughout his life.

Upon retiring from the Army, he became a bodyguard providing security for executives and dignitaries. He moved from executive protection to providing security for the Department of State in China, Malta, and Saudi Arabia.

Nemo enjoyed drawing, music, and sports, especially basketball. He played and coached basketball for decades and enjoyed every minute of it. When it came to music, he loved dancing to the oldies and made sure to tell everyone how he won a dance contest back in the day. Never at a loss for a good story, he could entertain with the best. His inexhaustible supply of stories will be remembered by many.

Nemo was preceded in death by his Father, Wellington E. Smith; Mother, Dorothy M. Anderson; and Brothers: Dennis Smith and Melvin Smith.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Sedrick V. Winston (Deri) of Chantilly, Virginia, Wellington N. Smith, Jr. (Chameka) of Dumfries, Virginia, Brittany D. Smith of Newport News, Virginia, and Malcolm L. Pose of Hamburg, Germany; Stepchildren: Shawn P. Winston (Maria) of Columbia, South Carolina, and Nicole R. Winston of Lorton, Virginia; Siblings: Marion Williams of Fresno, California, Valerie Windom of Fresno, California, Terlyn Smith Frazier (James) of Ocoee, Florida, and Pamela Smith Scott of Orlando, Florida; 6 Grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives, and friends.
