Wendell Barney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2012.
Our dad, Wendell Howard Barney, passed away peacefully in his home on January 26, 2012. He was born on July 12,1931, in Escalante, Utah, to Royal Barney and Lily Mae Moosman Barney. He was the eighth of fourteen children. In 1950, he married Nellie Joan Lasson, the love of his life. Together, they worked, raised a family, served in the church, traveled and enjoyed life for over 50 years. Nellie passed away in 2001 and Dad has missed her every day. Dad served in the LDS Church in many capacities, including Branch President, Bishop, High Councilor, and Stake President, but the calling he felt was the most important was that of a Home Teacher. He influenced and touched the lives of many people through his dedicated service and love. Dad & Mom served as missionaries in the Ireland Dublin Mission from February 1990 to August 1991. Upon returning home, Dad began working in the Provo Temple as an Ordinance Worker, where he faithfully served for over 20 years until he became too ill to continue. Dad was a very hard worker. He put in long days as a cattle rancher on his property in Birdseye and then on his ranch in Payson. He taught his children the value of work by his example as he worked along side them. Dad endured many health challenges throughout his life. He faced these trials with courage, strength and a quiet patience. He lived with type 1 diabetes for over 56 years, but never let it stop him from doing the things that he felt were important. Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Flinders, Dr. Frischknecht and their staffs for their compassionate care. Dad had a great love of sports that began in his youth and continued as he followed his children, grandchildren and, eventually, great grandchildren in their many sporting activities. He was an avid BYU fan and enjoyed many trips with the Cougar Club. Dad leaves behind four sons and two daughters: Philip (Patricia) Barney, Karen Bradford and Mark Barney of Spanish Fork: Dan (Valerie) Barney of Lake Havasu, Arizona; Paul (Laurie) Barney of Ridgecrest, California; Stacy (Cory) Anderson of Danville, California; nineteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie, his parents, four brothers and five sisters, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Our sweet, gentle dad will be greatly missed. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. in the Spanish Fork Stake Center, 1006 East 200 South, Spanish Fork, Utah. Family and friends may call at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main, Spanish Fork on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. or at the Stake Center on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the LDS Missionary Fund, the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
