Wesley Durrett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2025.
Wesley Thomas Durrett, age 36, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025 in Traverse City, Michigan, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born in Delaware, he was the beloved son of Mark Durrett Sr. (Jay) and Linda Durrett. Wesley spent much of his youth in Chesapeake City and Rock Hall, Maryland, where his grandfather first sparked his interest in carpentry-an art he would pursue with passion throughout his life.

Wesley lived in Belleville and then O'Fallon, Illinois, where he and his former wife, Monica (Henley), welcomed their children and where he formed many of his dearest friendships.

He later moved to Traverse City and Kalkaska, Michigan. His two cherished children, Willow and Mason Durrett, were his greatest joy. Together, they created countless memories: swimming, attending church, playing Zelda, watching movies, camping, and bouncing on the trampoline. Wesley will be remembered by friends and family for his sense of humor, kindness, compassion, generosity, and gentle nature.

A skilled carpenter, Wesley's craft brought him into the lives of many, giving him the opportunity to share his talents and help those around him. In addition to his children and parents, he is survived by his brother Ethan Durrett (Katie) nieces Eveana and Harbor Durrett, and sisters Caitlin Irwin (Rob)and Sarah Knoll (Jeff), niece Tabitha Knoll. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Wesley and Yvonne Durrett, John and Rebecca May, Mildred Miller and his brother, Mark Durrett Jr.

A memorial service celebrating Wesley's life will take place in Chesapeake City, Maryland this spring (details to be announced), with a live-stream available for those unable to attend. Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity at habitat reflecting Wesley's enduring spirit of kindness and service to others.

Friends and family are invited to share memories and condolences via Legacy.com, ensuring that Wesley's legacy of loyalty, love, and generosity continues to live on.

I am grateful to have known Wes. I first met him during a church youth trip to the church of the Pilgrim in DC with my wife, Sharron and our daughter, Amber who is close to his age. He was always a kind and polite young man who I got to know even better over time as a brief guest in our home and as member of our circle for a time.

We had many conversations about life, and the importance of family, gratitude and change. It seems that these featured very strongly in his adult life. I am saddened by the loss of his presence in the daily lives of his family and friends but am thankful for the strong impression in experiences and memories that he left with all who knew him. May he be at peace eternally now and may peace come to those who love him, eventually.

I met Wes & his children many yrs back. I am blessed beyond belief that he came into our lives and became part of our family. Be at peace sweetheart. As requested, we will all watch over your wife (Kaitlyn Musselman Durrett), and your children when we are able to see them again. Until we meet again, shine bright!
