Wesley NICOL Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Dec. 2 to Dec. 3, 2016.

NICOL, Wesley M. – CM LL.B
Passed away peacefully in Ottawa, in the warm embrace of family and close friends, in his eighty-sixth year. A caring and committed father and grandfather, Wes was the loving husband to Mary (née Robertson) for over fifty-eight years. Predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Marielle Nicol, his brother, Robert, and sisters, Ruth and Beverly, Wes will be sorrowfully missed by his four children, Bruce, Heather, Ian, and Janet Nicol; his twelve grandchildren, Rosanna, Alex, Oliver, David, Mark, Marielle, Nicola, Emmet, Carolyn, Meredith, Myles and Austin; and his step-grandsons, Lucas and Truman. His passing is also sadly mourned by his daughters-in-law, Hildegard Nicol and Jennifer Hicks; his sons-in-law, Martin Julien and Peter Wall; his adored niece, Kathy Brown; and his dearly loved sister-in-law, Joan Robertson.
Wes was born and raised in Ottawa. After securing his BA from Carleton University in 1954, he graduated from Osgoode Hall and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1958. He worked hard from a young age, starting out as a paperboy and delivery boy, and travelling to the far north as a labourer and land surveyor. The launch of the law firm Nicol and Lazier, in Ottawa, led to a successful career in real estate development. In 1966, Wesley founded Tartan Homes, builder of thousands of homes in the Ottawa area and the United States. Throughout his career, he enjoyed a sterling reputation within the Ottawa business community, which fondly remembers him as enviably thorough, determined and fair. In later years, Wes invested in numerous Ottawa start- ups and high-tech initiatives. A philanthropist, he established the Wesley and Mary Nicol Charitable Foundation, with a focus on local needs. Wes was a loyal supporter of the Liberal Party of Canada, chairing several fundraising committees for the Ottawa/ Carleton region from 1962 onwards. In 1997, he launched the Nicol Award, which has fostered and supported innumerable young entrepreneurs across Canada through a national competition for undergraduate students. A long-standing member of Carleton University's Board of Governors, he also held the position of Chair and Head of the Building Committee. In 2001, Wesley received Carleton's Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding entrepreneurial achievements. In 2006, Carleton awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Law.
In 2013, Wes was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his commitment to fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs. In the same year, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and Ottawa Business Journal awards honouring the best in Ottawa business.
A founding member of the cottage community 'Beaverlost', he and his family spent 50 years there, sharing in a wide variety of activities and sports; his role as "President for Life" and chief gut-bucket player will always be recollected with humour and appreciation. Wes passed many happy hours in his vegetable garden, and was especially known for his onions.

Dear Aunt Mary, Bruce, Heather, Ian and Janet,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband and father, respectively, my uncle Wesley, he was a great man.
I wish I could have been closer to you all over the past decades, but we lived so far away that it was not to be. Sometimes I wish my parents had never moved to L.A. where I was born and raised because I missed spending time with you all. Please accept my condolences and I hope we can get together before too much time passes again.
With love,
Norm Adams

I knew Wes for many years, firstly when I worked for Bob Nicol as a project manager, and then following that, when I was partner in Mueller Hein Construction (now R.E. Hein). He was a fine man and will be truly missed. It was a privilege to know him. My deepest sympathies to the Nicol family for your loss.

We are saddened to hear of Mr. Nichol's passing. We first met him when we were in the Dean's office of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Wes asked what we could do to ensure that new physicians would stay and provide family medicine services in Ottawa. We suggested that he might think of building comprehensive teaching health care clinics as part of his new housing developments. Within a flash he agreed to take it on. Over the next few months Wes engaged us and others in an energetic planning period to design such a clinic. He selflessly saw the model as something that could take root in all new housing developments in Ottawa. In short order we had lined up a large number of partners and we were throughly captured by Wes' enthusiasm, vision and leadership. Unfortunately we were unable to pull it off. But the example exemplifies Wes' entrepreneurial spirit and his unwavering commitment to Ottawa and its betterment. He responded and he inspired. I was so sad to hear the news. My thoughts are with you Mary, Bruce, Heather, Ian and Janet and your respective family's. My time with Wes was mostly at Beaverlost where he was always relaxed and happy. I am glad I was able to attend a social last year and listen to Wes on the gut bucket. I fondly remember our Beaverlost get togethers growing up with Wes leading the band. Once and awhile I would have a one on one with Wes and he would pass on a nugget or two of wisdom and a little history. My condolences

I have fond memories of Wes from back in the 70's while I was working as a lifeguard/health club attendant at Ottawa's Skyline Hotel. He had an immense love for playing squash and was an almost daily player there. My thoughts are with the family and his many friends. He will be missed in the Ottawa business community and down at Carleton U.

Our thoughts are with Wes' family on the news of his passing. These days there are few giants in this world, but Wes was an exception. His authenticity, generosity, business acumen, and kindness set an example for many. In addition he was also a great friend and mentor in every sence of the word.

Peace Wes - the world is a better place because you were in it. We are proud to have known you.
