In memory of
Robert Sintes
February 19, 2013
It is with sadness I read of the Death Of Wes Strohecker...he was kind to me (the writer Robert Sintes from New Zealand)..old crew of the Yacht Minerva when she was owned by Hugh and Marge Corum of California. Both Wes and Marcia took me over the Minerva up the Columbia River Gorge 30 years after I last saw her on the coast of Australia....I would welcome contact from Wes's family and Marcia to either [email protected] or [email protected] by letter to 90 Wiroa Road Kerikeri New Zealand.
Marge Witus the original owner is still alive in Claifornia.

Wes may have been the first adult in my life who asked to be called by his first name. He always had a big smile and a kind word for all us kids running around with Kristin. He was so friendly and larger than life to a 10 year old kid; he had a huge sailboat, he could ski faster than any of us kids and he ran a grocery store!! I have many happy and fun memories of Wes and feel lucky to have known him. My deepest sympathy to the family, losing a life force like Wes leaves a large void. With love, Mary

There is nothing as special and lasting as childhood friendships like the memories I have of Wes Strohecker. He was a very special part of our group of children on both Old Orchard Road and Montgomery Drive. Winter sledding or Summer running the paths on the hills, We had great times. Wes will always be in my mind.

My love and thoughts go out to the Strohecker Family- I have great memories of Wes, who really was the cool neighborhood Dad and Boss. He had to keep a weather eye out for all of us SW Hooligans: charging candy and Cokes, running through the aisles to sneak a ride down the back room conveyer belt and being EVERYWHERE, at any time. And he always had that glint in his eye like he understood our childhood need for naughty. Portland will miss him- this icon, this patriarch, this native son.

Nancy and Dale, so hard saying goodbye I am sure. Hoping that those little memories of the pleasant things that you, and only you have of your father will continuously provide a place of warmth and peace in your life going forward.

My dear family Strohecker,
I share with you in the loss of Wes- I share with you in grief, but also in thankfulness for the extraordinary life that was lead by the man. I will remember him with fondness and good humor, as father to Dale (one of my best friends in this life), Tamera, Nancy and Molly. He has his best tribute in how well his children have turned out! I wish I could be there on Monday, but I will be with you all in my thoughts and in spirit.
I send my best regards,
carlene plew

To Marcia and family oh the many fond memories I have of going up and down the Coast with you Mate, the many bar crossings and foggy nights and hours of sea tales all are still there. We will catch up on the other side Mate

Uncle Wes was a great guy. Ill never forget getting busted at the check stand when I was 7. I was trying to buy a Baby Ruth candy bar. Wes said,"your mother doesn't allow you to buy candy." I probably turned white and was trembling (it still scares me today). However Uncle Wes let me skate and he never told my Mom. I never charged another candy bar either.
During gradeschool he often picked me up at school in his stylin green Jag to hustle me to my piano lessons. Nothing like getting rescued from Ainsworth State prison by your cool Uncle with the awesome Jag XKE.
I also recall he cofounded the Scott Company of the legendary Scott poles. Super great guy!! Big loss.

To Marcia, The Kids and Grandkids, we are thinking of you! I was deeply saddened to read of Wes's death. I am sure your loss is huge. Wes was truly a fine man. I have many fond memories of times shared at PYC and Wes's dear boat Minerva. I had the great joy of spending one day with Wes and a childhood friend of his as they helped me deal with repairs to our boat. It was a day full of adventure and lots of laughing! Makes me giggle to remember the day all these years later..even the West Marine store was an adventure with Wes!!

My greatest sympathies to Marcia and all Wes's family. He was a great man. I have very fond memories of time at sea on a couple of trips up and down the Coast with Wes, and many others centered around sailing and boats.
No more Bar Crossings to worry about now, Wes! The Wind's behind you! Good Sailing! I hope Minerva's waiting at the Dock when you get there!

I first discovered Strohecker's 45 years ago and was taken by its charm and the lovely people who ran it. Through all the years of raising my own family in SW Portland and all the changes to the store - because of the family that ran it - it still remains my favorite grocery store anywhere!
