Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 16, 2025.
Dr. Wi Jo Kang, age 95, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in Bettendorf, Iowa. Born in Jinju, South Korea, Dr. Kang led a life devoted to scholarship, faith, and service. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967, a milestone that marked the beginning of a distinguished academic career. Dr. Kang taught at several esteemed institutions, including Columbia University, Valparaiso University, Concordia Seminary, and Wartburg Theological Seminary. His passion for theology and education influenced generations of students and colleagues. From 1950 to 1953, Dr. Kang served in the Korean War as an interpreter in the 49th Field Artillery Battalion of the 7th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army as a Korean Augmentee to the United States Army (KATUSA). His service included participation in the Inchon landings and the Hungnam Evacuation from the Chosin Reservoir, wartime experiences that deepened his commitment to peace and reconciliation. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Chong-Ja Kang; four children; four stepchildren; fifteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He will be remembered not only for his academic and spiritual contributions but also for his enduring love for family and community.

Remembering my seminary professor. Rest in God's eternal light, grace and peace + I'm especially remembering the luncheons hosted by both Bill Danker (first Lutheran missionary to Japan) & WiJo Kang. Good conversations and of course, good food! Rest easy dear friend!
