Wiley M. Crockett

“Sailing is a metaphor for life itself, of how we lead our lives. Some choose to let the winds and currents take them where they will; to go with the flow. Others use the winds to navigate, towards destinations chosen by them; some of them are fanatic about it; Wiley Crockett was such a sailor” (Wiley’s friend Douglas Mesney in An Incredible Epic, 2020).
Wiley Crockett, age 77, died February 12, 2021. Wiley lived as he sailed—he was fanatic about life and happiest in the company of his many friends, who remember him fondly. He was an intense competitor in both motorcycle racing and sailing and was excellent at both. He raced and won from Marble Head, Massachusetts, to Key West, Florida; from Manhasset Bay, Long Island, to Chicago, Illinois; and from Newport, Rhode Island, to Newport Beach, California. His proudest achievement was winning Block Island Race Week.
As a young man, Wiley found Barbara, the love of his life, at Block Island, Rhode Island, and will return to her there. He is survived by his brother, Jay; his sister, Deborah; a bevvy of nieces and nephews, and many friends from throughout his life. A memorial service is planned for later in 2021. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Wiley was our neighbor and friend in Westport. We were sorry to here of Wiley’s passing. He was a robust personality and gave us many a laugh (and a good political argument here and there). He always added spark to our gatherings. We lost touch over the years, as happens in life. If it’s possible to let us know when his memorial service will be, we’d all like to attend and pay a final goodby to our old neighbor ([email protected]). Joan Tripp

Wiley (and Barbara) were good friends of ours through ballroom dancing classes. Even though we took many classes with them, Wiley always preferred the box step. When we had Kentucky Derby parties, it was Wiley who wore the most colorful shirt, and even had the most wins at that race. We will miss him.

I am very sorry for your loss, our loss. Wiley and I have sailed together in a number of venues. He helped me trailer my boat to Key West in 2010, He was a guy that you always knew where you stood with him. I miss both he and Barbra. They will always be part of my fondest memories.
