Willard Sandy Boyd

Professor Boyd,

No matter how busy Boyd was, his humility and his dedication to so many communities made him so approachable when I engaged with him between 2012 and 2014. We were fortunate to work towards the events leading up to the anniversary of the Magna Carta, how terrific was that?

I am confident that Boyd’s legacy will inspire all to work together to keep his name on the Law School much beyond Boyd’s leaving this earthly life.

Boyd lived and he provided many contributions to our lovely communities.

As our elders begin to pass away, I am saddened that I am sometimes unable to attend events alongside my amazing Hawkeye and wider American community. I may not have been there to say goodbye. But I was there in spirit, and I hope I will attend as many other activities as possible—to see Boyd’s Iowa babies and grandbabies.

Though I never became a biological mother, I did find a few Iowa babies along the way myself and I was always an Iowa daughter before I even knew that I was...and Boyd even showed me approaches to being an Iowa grandmama in the law.

I was an undergrad student who happened to run into President Boyd on campus during one of his final days in 1981, and reached out to shake his hand and tell him "thanks". He had tears in his eyes as he shook my hand, and it struck me how much the university must have meant to him. I would like his family to know that I have never forgotten that moment. As a native Iowan, and U of I graduate, I appreciate his contributions and love for the U of I. President Boyd is a true Hawkeye legend.
