Long Beach, California. He was 97 years old.
Born on June 13, 1927, in Aurora, Illinois, Will's early years were marked by a deep curiosity and love for learning that would shape the course of his life. He pursued undergraduate studies at both Aurora College and Northern Illinois University before earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois-a milestone that launched a remarkable academic career.
Will served proudly in the United States Air Force, demonstrating the same dedication and integrity that would later define his professional and personal life. Following his military service, he embarked on an influential academic journey as a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) which he retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1987. In 1961, during his tenure at Stanford, he co-authored the groundbreaking James-Stein Estimator-an achievement that left a lasting mark on statistical theory and continues to influence research today.
Beyond academia, Will was known for his unmeasured passions. A lifelong supporter of the Chicago Cubs and an enthusiastic fan of CSULB's men's and women's volleyball teams, he brought energy and loyalty to every game he followed. His love for animals was profound; over the years he rescued more than 20 dogs from the Long Beach Animal Shelter, offering them loving homes and companionship
Will found joy in life's simple pleasures-daily Sudoku puzzles, his focus was amazing; golf and hiking kept him active; and music brought him comfort and delighted especially anything by Olivia Newton-John, who held a special place in his heart. His night walks through Heartwell Park with his dogs and neighborhood friends and their dogs became a beloved ritual where he met John Miller, a true friend, and his dog Kaylee. With only a backyard fence between them, Will met Brian and Julie Kelley, sharing their love of dogs, and welcoming their baby, Halie, now 31. Will and the Kelley's cherished a deep friendship of over 34 years.
In his later years, Will was cared for with great devotion by Nelson Maligaya and Tony Alvarado whose ten years of compassionate support brought immeasurable comfort to him and those around him. Their kindness will always be remembered with heartfelt gratitude.
