William ANDERSON Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jan. 20 to Jan. 21, 2012.
ANDERSON, William Andrew
1911 - 2012
William Andrew Anderson died on Sunday January 15, 2012 at the remarkable age of 100 years. He was born August 24, 1911 in Wetaskawin, AB, into a large Norwegian family. He had six sisters, Alma, Edna, Hilda, Betty, Bernice, and Lynn, and two brothers, Gordon and Andy. As a young man he joined the Air Force.
On leave, visiting friends in Regina, he met Myrtle Marguerite McKee who he married in Medicine Hat two weeks later. Together they moved to Fort Macleod, AB where the allied forces were gathering to learn to fly. To his great frustration it was discovered that he was colour blind and he was grounded, but he was bright and so was quickly promoted to flight lieutenant where he instructed new pilots (Link Trainer). It was here in Fort Macleod that Myrt and Bill's only child was born, a girl, Joan Anderson who would later become Joni Mitchell.
When the war ended Bill found work managing a grocery store in Maidstone. A few years later he was transferred to the North Battleford store - OK Economy. Here he joined the Kinsmen Club, gave trumpet lessons, for a season led the marching band, played for dances and in adjudicated competition at the united church.
In 1952 he was promoted to merchandising coordinator for Shelly Bros., the owners of the OK Economy Chain, and transferred to Saskatoon. Here he was a member of the Usadian Club and traded tennis for golf. When he retired in 77 he counselled small businesses around the province.
He was a good card player and a fine athlete, winning trophies for tennis in his youth and golf in his later years. He always wanted to shoot his age, and at 82 he shot an 82.
Myrt and Bill cross country skied well into their 80's, enjoyed great health and thanks to Myrtle's dietary knowledge they were on no medications until they began to fail, a little, in their 90's.
Bill Anderson was lucky. Once in a scrabble game we watched him lay down the word "xylophone" from the triple score on the left hand corner to the double in the middle. We gasped as the points were added up while he laughed and gleamed. I don't know how many winning raffle tickets he held in his life, but he won a lot - lawn furniture, tape decks, beta and in time VHS, a clock radio etc. He never played the lottery.
Bill Anderson was an optimist. He bought himself a new car at 94 and drove it on little excursions (without mishap) until at 99 he got disorientated and they grounded him. He set himself a goal - to golf on his hundredth birthday, which he did. He was advised just to putt.
After that amazing accomplishment he lapsed into remembrances and fantasies and finally died, comfortably in his sleep on January 15, 2012 in his 101 year on earth. He is survived by a brother Gordon, a sister Lynn, numerous nephews and nieces and by his daughter, Joni Mitchell, and her daughter Kilauren Gibb and two great- grandchildren, Marlin and Daisy. He will be remembered fondly for his great laugh, his remarkable luck and his exceptional skill at keeping his eye on the ball. Funeral Services will take place on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home, (4th Avenue and 25th Street).
Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected].
Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home, 306-244-5577.

have only just learned of the passing of your father, William. much heartfelt sympathies, albeit much belated. as a native american and, like you, a prairie girl (from oklahoma), i send you much love, as we struggle to accept that life is but a wisp of smoke ... and yet as solid as the very earth beneath our feet. please enjoy your life and those special people who inhabit your world, live in peace, and know that many love you and stand with you in spirit. oh, and thank you for creating the music that will be played at my own memorial service. your sister in spirit.

Dear Joni and Family,
My most heartfelt condolences go out to you. I am very sorry for your loss. It's so difficult to lose your daddy. Keep your memories close; they will help sustain you. What a blessing to have family members who care for you and yours. Keep each other close. My mother always said, family is all we really have, for they are the ones who are there for you, no matter what. My father's last words of advice: "Be good...and be happy." Good advice. Difficult to do. But we must try.
Love,

Dear Joan, My Father was a pilot in WW ll and also played the trumpet. "Tea Leaf" Prophecy has always resonated with me, as my parents met during that time too. He passed in 1997 and still miss him. When there's a beautiful sunset I think of him and what will follow...a blanket of Stars that we shared together on many nights, where we spotted lots of constellations with many peppered stories. I didn't know your Father but he had to be an incredible being, as Daughters usually take after their Fathers.
My condolences to you and your family.

Wow, what a man. I was kinda amazed how similar the dates were to my Mom's life. She was born August 24, 1914 and passed away January 4, 2012, didn't quite make it to 100. My condolences to the family.

Dear Joni (and family),
I just heard belatedly of the loss of your father and thought about the dream I had just last night which featured my dear father now gone four years and some months. He was lucky in such things as raffles, bingo and Sheepshead (a german card game played almost exclusively in Wisconsin where I come from). Your dad's eulogy reminded me of how much I miss mine. My thoughts are with you and yours. All we can do is continue to make art however in whatever form... although some new music from you would be a lovely bonus. I miss your voice. -- Dani Dudovick (Chicago, IL)

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure that his positive attitude and love of life is the reason he spent 101 years on this earth. I lost my mother on February 15, 2012 and know the emptiness and sorrow you are feeling. My deepest sympathies.

When my Father passed I though, well that's it , now I'm an orphan. It made me so sad and I hoped as time passed I might feel better. Sometimes time really can't heal all . We go on and try to keep all who lived in our past in our hearts.
My full heart goes out to you upon hearing of your loss. Maybe you will find peace in knowing he must have been so proud of you.

A father is a special person, there is no other man who can make you feel as important as your father can, special life long connection. It sounds like your father was that kind of man for you. I am so happy for the long life he had and all the lovely times you must have had with him. I hope you are thinking of those memories when you think of him.

Dear Joni,

I give my condolences to you. As I have been a follower of yours for decades (since the late 60‘s), I would like to say that it certainly sounds like your father was a truly wonderful, intelligent, giving and loving man. What an opportunity both he and your superb mother had, to live a full life together as they experienced raising you as one of a kind - a true genius in my eyes. It would have been great to have conversed with such outstanding minds and to admire them for your upbringing. You are fortunate to be able to keep your loving memories within regarding your beautiful parents and to cherish them forever. May you always have peace.

I thank you and your father for the first time I heard you sing, "Papa's faith is people and Mama she believes in cleaning." It opened my heart's eye to a new level of understanding, admiration and love for my own Papa and Mama.
God bless you and may He be giving your father divine company.

To Joni and family,

I am so sorry for your incredible loss. What a man he must have been! I wonder if anyone ever asked him who his favorite singer was? It would appear he had a marvelous life, such a luxury in this world. Joni's music has been a constant companion to me for most of my life, and I can only hope he was as in love with it as I have been.

Dear Joni,

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

In the rising of the sun and its going down,
We Remember Them.

In the bowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
We Remember Them.

In the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring.
We Remember Them.

In the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer,
We Remember Them.

In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn.
We Remember Them.

In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
We Remember Them.

When we are weary and in need of strength,
We Remember Them.

When we are lost and sick of heart,
We Remember Them.

When we have joys and special celebrations we yearn to share,
We Remember Them.

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are part of us.
We Remember Them.

I hope you will find comfort in your memories.
Take care,

As a former neighbour (1914 - Hanover Ave) we want to offer our most sincere condolences. As kids/young adults we knew the whole Anderson family and our mother was a close friend to both of Joni's parents. Our father was a house painter - and did a bit of work in Joni's family home. Both of your parent, and the Mussel family (son - Neil) spent a lot of hours working on their yards and flowers for many years

My sincere condolences to the family. There is never a good time to lose a loved one or a family member. My dad was born in 1911 as well and I miss him dearly. I have been a fan of Joni Mitchell's for more than 30 years. Her music and the wisdom in her lyrics helped me through some of my darkest hours, singing one of her songs in a restaurant kitchen was the first connection that brought me my best friend, and she still brings me such joy. Her father sounds like he was a good father and a good man.......may God bless him and all of his family.
