William Baggott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2024.
William Keeffe Baggott (Bill) passed away peacefully on March 29, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born on May 3, 1936, in Brooklyn to Helen Gidley Baggott, a strong and shy bookkeeper, and William Baggott, a charmer known for his pratfalls and dancing. After his father's death, he was raised by and among incredible women, his mother and aunt and two sisters in Morgantown, West Virginia. He vividly remembered a joyful childhood that included roaming mountains dusted with coal ash.

He graduated from a five-year engineering program in three years at West Virginia University, served in the US Coast Guard Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. He got his law degree from George Washington Univeristy. In D.C., he met the love of his life, Glenda Smith Baggott. They have four children Kathleen Baggott, William Baggott and spouse Patricia Baggott, Melanie Rehberg and spouse Scott Rehberg, Julianna Baggott and spouse David Scott; thirteen grandchildren, Sinclair and spouse Kristin, James and spouse Mary, Cecelia, Molly, Carly, Grace, Lorelei and spouse Lev, Henry, William, Phoebe and spouse Jordan, Finneas, Theo, and Othilia; four great grandchildren, Lilia, Ava, Quinn, Lucian, and counting. Bill and Glenda celebrated 64 years of marriage, an epic kind of love.

Bill worked for thirty years at DuPont, pro-bono for the ACLU, as a public defender, and head of the Newark Housing Authority, fighting for underserved communities. He was an advocate for civil rights for all.

He retired at age 56, becoming a pilot, host to foreign travelers and refugees, novelist, genealogist, professor of democracy in the Czech Republic after the fall of the USSR, a world-wide traveler, researcher, outdoorsman, sage advisor, official Irishman, and, mainly, a full-time grandfather. An inventor of games and treasure hunts, he told people he loved them, was proud of them, and thankful for them. He is remembered for his patience and incredible gratitude for being alive. His faith was founded on looking at the full humanity of every person you meet. He danced every day and on every occasion-with abandon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.

I only met Bill Baggott a few times, but I've enjoyed many happy Happy Hours with Glenda and Mom. Bill and Glenda were among the dearest friends of my parents, Bill and Phyllis Sisk. Mom still warmly remembers the special Christmas Eves they shared with Bill and Glenda for many years. And Bill was among Dad's ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club companions. Heartfelt condolences to Glenda and all the Baggott clan. - Andrea Sisk King, Auckland NZ

My husband and I lived across the street from Melanie and Scott for quite a few years. Although we never knew him personally, I did know that Mr. Baggott loved his family and had a great zest for life. And yes, we had the opportunity to see him twirl his lovely wife around the dance floor on an occasion. But his beautiful daughter, Melanie, and his outstanding grandson, Sinclair, are how I see his legacy continuing to live on. Never has there been a kinder or more generous person than Melanie Rehberg. So, job well done Mr. William Baggott. Love to all

I met "Mister Bill", (yes, called him that after the SNL puppet) when I was in the 4th grade, a VERY long time ago. I've never met a man so kind, welcoming, loving and accepting. He never judged me. And, I think he loved me more when we were all in California leaving the beach, and I told his granddaughter Cecelia it would not be a good idea to bring back a bag of seaweed!! I would visit them each time I came back to DE. I will miss his laugh and smile too. My sympathies and love go out to the family.

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I am John O'Hare, the son of Eileen Baggott from Providence RI. Bill's grandfather and my grandfather came to Philidelphia Landing, Philidelphia together from Herbertown, Co. Limerick Ireland in the 1890s. I remember your father as the organizer of us American Baggotts for the 2001 Baggott Family reunion in Ireland. We never got to go due to the happenings on 9/11 but Bill organized a reunion at his home in Newark, Deleware that we attended. It was a fine get together with singing and dancing and made a great memory by your father's enthusiasm and good nature. Sorry for your loss. John

I remember my cousin Bill, while staying at my grandparents home in Raleigh, NC carrying all of us kids on a snipe hunt...I was quite young and couldn't be convinced after a long time of him trying, that I was not going to actually catch one. I remember the Father dancing with his daughter Melanie at her wedding and the caring cousin who came with Glenda to visit with us at the hospital when my father was dying! RIP Cousin Bill!
