William CHOMYN Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jan. 8 to Jan. 9, 2014.
CHOMYN, William (Bill)
On January 6, 2014, William (Bill) Chomyn passed away.
Bill was born in 1929 in Ukraine. Very shortly thereafter, his family immigrated to Canada. His parents spoke Ukrainian, were illiterate, and they were very vulnerable. He grew up in the depression in abject poverty.
Bill's life was shaped by these early experiences in the country. As the oldest child, he was the family translator and negotiator. Hence he developed strong leadership and organizational skills. Always fearing a return to poverty he was practical, adverse to risk, and frugal, teaching his entire family that it didn't matter how much you made, but how much you saved. Predictably he honed a very strong sense of social justice and was active in progressive politics and causes his entire life. He hated seeing suffering of any kind.
But most of all, Bill loved everyone. He had many close friends whom he visited and who visited him often. He was renowned for his generosity.
Bill was married to Olga (nee Ursulak) and had three children, Darlene, Nadia and Dwayne. Olga and Darlene predeceased him. He had close and regular contact with his children but particularly enjoyed his visits with his grandchildren, Michael and Jeff (aka "Jed") McVey, Lauren, Alanna (aka "Alenna/Elena/etc.") and Caitlin Chomyn and Dana Vinge, making them a meal and discussing the intricacies of mushroom picking or some other topic of interest. They now all know that ideally they should approach a mushroom with the sun at their backs.
There will be no funeral but a memorial conducted in accordance with Bill's wishes will be scheduled at a later time. Always the host, he drew up the guest list, organized the venue, selected the meal, negotiated "a fair price", prepared the music and has a draft eulogy "on file." In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut, 10985 - 124 Street N.W., Edmonton, AB T5M 0H9 would be appreciated.

Bill can be proud of a life well lived. The mold was broken after producing men such as Bill Chomyn, one of a generation whose life experience was met head on with strength of character and compassion. His talent as a musician and his dedication to the battle for a more fair society influenced and enriched the lives of several more generations. We are so grateful for this legacy. On behalf of my Mom, Laura Tuomi, and our family we extend our deepest sympathy to all the Chomyn family. Bill lives on in all our treasured memories.

To Nadia, Dwayne and families,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your father and grandfather. Bill was an early teacher and mentor. I lived with him, Olga, and the kids, when I moved to Edmonton in 1960 to work in the AUUC. Not only did Bill provide guidance with work and life decisions, he also was a good friend, showing emotional support and understanding when it was needed. Though our paths diverged we maintained contact through the years. He and Olga always welcomed me to their home for a hearty meal and energetic discussions.
Bill is to be honored for his contributions to especially the progressive Ukrainian community and for the care, consideration, and help he extended to so many others. His life is a wonderful example of selfless service. He will be missed and his memory will be cherished.

Bill told such amazing stories when we worked together at the camp. He was never sad, always humble and kind. I will always remember his great work with the choirs and orchestra at the Ukrainian center. I am grateful to have had the honor to work with him at the concerts and festivals, and to travel with the music groups to the Ukraine.
He has been instrumental in contributing to the rich cultural heritage of this city. Rest in Peace dear friend ...

Dear Nadia, Dwayne & Families -- please accept our heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your Dad. We admired him for many things -- for his leadership, his talents, and mostly for his warmth and integrity. His cheerful demeanor, twinkling eyes, and empathy will be remembered with great fondness. We hope that your wonderful memories of a very good man will sustain you all through this difficult time, and will bring smiles every time you think of him, as we will.

Bill was an absolutely unforgettable person and impressed me even as a child of 6 in the late 1950s when I started going to "The Hall". He was always so full of energy dashing around the Ukrainian Centre, dealing with so many people, teaching music, conducting the choirs and orchestra, smiling and laughing. My mother, Zena, knew him well and played mandolin and sang under his baton. I loved his stamping foot that got our attention, or struck the rhythm for a piece of music. He did an amazing job teaching children like myself and I still count myself lucky to have learned songs like "May There Always Be Sunshine" as well as all the great Taras Shevchenko words and songs from him. We all have lost an extraordinary, talented man for whom I have total respect. My condolences to all his family and loved ones.

Bill Chomyn played such a large part in our family and I know that personally I will never forget his huge smile and his love of life. I had to smile when I read that he had planned everything right down to the "fair price". That was so very Bill.

Sincerest thoughts go out to Nadia, Dwayne and the whole family from Dmetro, Twila and I.

Bill was a very special person and will never be forgotten. Love to you all.
