William Cleveland Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun from Sep. 29 to Sep. 30, 2006.
CLEVELAND _ William Lee This loving husband, distinguished scholar, and stimulating teacher died Thursday, September 28, 2006, at the all too young age of 65. Bill was born the son of Jackson and Bothilda Cleveland on April 23, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving his doctorate at Princeton University, he moved to British Columbia in 1968 to teach the History of the Modern Middle East at Simon Fraser University. Over the next 38 years, he imbued many students with a better appreciation and understanding of the complexities and dynamics of this region of the world. Simon Fraser University recognized his valuable contributions with its Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001. Bill's non-academic passions were golf, gardening and the company of his many good friends. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gretchen, and many family members in the United States. We would like to thank Dr. Paul Sugar and the Intensive Care staff at Lions Gate Hospital for their exceptional care and treatment of Bill during the past month. The date for a memorial reception will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oncology Program, c/o Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
