In memory of
Jack Degan
August 21, 2009
Sorry we are so late in acknowledging Uncle Bill's passing. We only became aware of it the other day. Ever since I was a child, Uncle Bill was always my hero. He always had time for me when I was young and I loved being with him and your mother when we visited from Oz. We'll miss the strolls to Castle Island also. It is the end of an era for us.
We send our deepest sympathy to you and your families.
Love,
Jack and Anne

Ms. Karen Degan, Ms. Sally Glora and Ms. Elaine Niles,
My wife, Nancy, and I express our heartfelt sorrow and condolences at the death of your father and my former squadron mate. We would have expressed our thoughts personally but we did not receive word of his passing until after the funeral.
Bill and other Squantum squadron mates attended our wedding in Hanover, NH, 53 years ago and we enjoyed many an evening at the Dreamwold with him and your Mother. Your Dad was one well-respected Marine. As a young 2nd Lt., I flew with him in Korea from August, 1951 until our return in 1952. The Marine Bond goes back many years at Squantum and NAS South Weymouth. Semper Fidelis.
Respectfully yours, James M. Mitchell, Jr., Colonel, USMCR, (ret.)

Col. Degan,
Sir, as a fellow Marine I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USMC-especially during WW II and the Korean War. It was the history and accomplishments made by you and your fellow Marines back then that all us Marines who followed in your footsteps have always tried to live up to. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
Semper Fi Devil Dog!

there is no need to mention any one person idividually, because mr. degan was great friends with all that he crossed paths with! i will remember him and miss him dearly, he was always good to me and treated me as if i was one of his grandkids, he was always a great guy to me and always had something positive to say to me!! i'm gonna miss going out with him, brian, eddie, sally and everyone else that had many great days together. even though mr. degan was many years older than us, we always considered him one of the guys when we went out on the boat, yacht club, seapoint or anyplace else we visited together in the past.... I AM SOOOOO SORRY TO LOSE THIS MAN, but am happy i had the chance to know him MICHAEL STRUZIK

Sally and Elaine-
I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. Many of us knew that, somehow, he was this impressive, accomplished guy. But you all were so discreet about that. His obituary makes it clear that he was even more accomplished and more impressive of a person than we suspected.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

Elaine & Sally & Karen -During those dark days of August 1992 Bill Sr. remained a rock while the rest of us attempted to make some sense in the death of Bill Jr. I always hold a special place in my heart for the Colonel.

It was a pleasure and honor that I will not forget, to have sat at table with Bill Degan, to read his war story, to know his cheerful and optimistic spirit.
As Lara Coyne's honorary grandparents "Gran-Lee" and "Gran-Sue," we will help little Lara honor Bill along with Lara's namesake, Lt. Lara Vincent.USMC. Bill and Lara 1st were real Marines. Lt. Lara Vincent knew Bill, too. He admired her guts, brains and her unforgettable bearing, and Lara adored Bill.

Great Uncle Billy:
It’s devastating you’re gone. I am not related by birth and only because you were a Brother in-law to my Mother Muriel.
What I can say is you are still an inspiration to me and my family.
As a child seeing you and Joe and Muriel Coyne’s home for a party, attending my wedding and just being around you was amazing. You are larger than life. You are the reason I joined the Marine Corps. You filled a gap for me and my brothers and provided a distant positive adult male figure role that will live on forever. Sir, my family didn’t live in South Boston. We didn’t get to see you often but when we did it was an event and I will miss you. Thanks for being there from a distance. Thanks to you and Marie for allowing my family into your home hearts and what I feel terrible you’re gone. Semper Fi.

In the early 1950s,I served as Colonel Degan's enlisted Plane Captain when he flew F4U Corsairs out of the Naval Air Station Squantum, Mass. He was well liked and respected by all who served with him. The welfare of the junior enlisted Marines was always a concern of his.
Later in my career, I came to know his son, the late LtCol Bill Degan. He, like his father, also cared about the young Marines in his charge.
My sincere condolences to the Colonel's family and friends.
Those of us who knew him and his son, will never forget them.
Semper Fidelis, Colonel.
