William Dell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2025.
William Thomas Dell, of Myrtle Beach, SC died Thursday, September 28, 1995, at his residence following an illness. Bill Dell was born on August 25, 1926 in Robertsdale, Pennsylvania. Bill was the son of the late Chester P. and Orthell A. Wilkens Dell. Bill had significant natural mechanical abilities and was known as someone who could fix just about anything. He loved working on cars, camping, hunting, and boating.

When World War II broke out, Bill enlisted in the Navy. He was serving on the US Aircraft Carrier Bunker Hill in Okinawa, when it was struck by two kamikazes on May 11, 1945, setting the vessel on fire. Bill survived, although 396 of his fellow servicemen were killed or missing that day. After he returned home from the war, he began dating Betty Anderson, who thereafter became his wife. For the next five decades, Bill and Betty would raise their family, settling down in Alexandria, VA. To no one's surprise, Bill landed a job and very long career as a mechanic with United Airlines. After retirement in 1990, Bill and Betty moved to Myrtle Beach, SC where they renovated and rebuilt a home a few blocks off the ocean.

Survivors at the time of passing included his wife, Betty Anderson Dell of Myrtle Beach; two sons, Michael W. Dell of Wilmington, NC, and Stephen T. Dell of Manassas, VA; one daughter, Pamela D. Leahy of Virginia Beach, VA; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services were October 7, 1995, at the Cameron Methodist Church in Alexandria, VA. Burial was the next day in Broad Top Cemetery in Broad Top, PA.
