William DONLEVY Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Dec. 29 to Dec. 30, 2014.

William Roderick (Rod) Donlevy Q.C.
March 3, 1949 – December 25, 2014
It is with great sadness that the Donlevy family announces the passing of our husband, father and brother Rod. After a heroic battle with cancer, Rod was taken to the Lord on Christmas Day. He passed surrounded by his family and friends.
Leaving to mourn Rod is his wife Lorna Donlevy, his children Jamie, Kelly, Andrew (Jen) and Brett, grandchildren Amelia, Riley, Isabel, Heidi, Eithen, Charlotte, Kade, step children Carrie Roblin, Mark Roblin (Vanessa), Blair Roblin, Kim Roblin, his brothers Urban (Patti), Kent, Joe and sister Mary (Doug Konkin) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and aunts in the extended Donlevy family across Canada and the United States.
Rod was predeceased by his parents Urban and Helen Donlevy, brother Father Paul Donlevy and his sister-in-law Claire Donlevy.
Rod's life was shaped by his profession, his family, his talent and his faith. All of which provided the palette for him to perform his life long calling of service to others.
Rod was born in Saskatoon on March 3, 1949 and attended St. Paul's high school and Holy Cross High school. He entered Law School in 1969 graduating with a Bachelor of Law in 1972.
Rod was called to the Bar in 1974 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2007. He began his practice as a partner in the Henderson, Donlevy & Campbell Law firm and established Donlevy and Company in 1985. His firm was merged with McKercher LLP in 2006 and Rod remained a partner at McKercher until he died.
In his 40 years in practice Rod provided service to his clients on commercial and personal matters with reach to the national stage as he represented the Grey Nuns and over 50 Catholic organizations for the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement. He was a respected barrister and solicitor all of his professional life and was always available to his clients big or small. He was passionate in his service whether the matter was the purchase of a company or the purchase of a home. Rod's relationship with his clients was much deeper than simply "the lawyer" and many life long friendships came from this facet of his life.
An active and valued participant in many non-profit organizations, Rod served as Vice Chair of the Catholic Health Ministry of Saskatchewan and Chair and Director of St. Paul's (Grey Nuns) Hospital. He was a national director of the Canadian Trotting Association and Vice President of the Canadian Special Olympic Games in Saskatoon.
Rod shaped his life around his children and family and was always there to organize an event, pick up a child, provide advice, make you laugh or comfort you when you needed a shoulder to cry on. How he found time for this remains a mystery to us all but he drew on a wellspring of energy and caring that simply had no end. First with his hand up in everything Rod was there with unfailing good nature, patience, creativity and humor and an enormous drive.
Any description of Rod must include his love of music and how he shared his talents with others. Rod was a choirmaster and leader of sacred music in whatever parish he attended. He led choirs at St. Joseph's, St. Francis as well as St. Paul's Cathedral. He was very generous with his talent and was a regular pro bono performer at funeral homes in Saskatoon where he sang at over 400 funerals over the years. Many events were blessed by the presence of Rod's wife Lorna, a gifted professional musician. These performances became much more than the sum of its parts as, together, Rod and Lorna created music that truly moved the soul.
Rod's faith was strong. Through life's adversity and to the end he remained steadfast in confidence and hope in the Lord and whether it was serving with Catholic organizations in health care, managing sacred music, leading fund raising drives or helping clients with complicated family or estate matters, Rod was perfectly comfortable with how Christ walked with him and knew in his soul that our Lord would provide.
In many ways Rod was bigger than life – always involved, always committed, always making a difference.
He walks with the Lord.
The family wishes to thank the very special people that helped Rod in his journey and at his passing. - Dr. Ahmed and the caregivers at the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic. Dr. Moser and Dr. Ed Nykiforuk. We also wish to thank Rod's and our special friend Sonja Kortje who was of such comfort to Rod in his last days as well as Shaun Turner who supported Rod professionally for almost a decade.
Prayers for Rod will be held on Monday December 29 at 7:00pm at St. Paul's Co Cathedral, 720 Spadina Cres. Saskatoon. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday December 30 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 217 Lenore Dr. Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to St. Paul's Hospital Foundation, 1702 - 20th Street West, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7M 0Z9. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected] Arrangements are entrusted to Lyle Burkell at SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME (306) 244-5577.

Our whole family was saddened to hear of Rod's passing – I articled at Donlevy and Co. as a new lawyer at 45 years of age, a whole month younger than Rod. He and Mike showed me how to practice law using common sense and a real concern for the best interests of our clients, and also showed me you really did need a sense of humour to get anywhere in the business of the law (some of those guys on the other side I tell ya………...) I also had the privilege of working with and becoming friends with Mary. Two short years at Donlevy and Co. before I left to be an “owner” lawyer instead of a “tenant” lawyer (as Kent put it) but Rod was a solid friend for life to me and my family. I have only rarely seen Rod for a long time now but will miss just knowing he is around. Our condolences to all his family.

I had the good fortune to come to know Rod through the IRS litigation process in Alberta. He was an excellent lawyer whose legal skills were matched by his humanity both of which garnered the respect of those who crossed paths with him. My sympathies to his family for their loss.

I had the honour of having significant interaction with Rod around Indian Residential Schools issues, including having one of the first hearings together under the ADR Process, which preceded the Settlement Agreement. I am also very much aware of Rod's work on the Chief Adjudicator's Reference Group (CARG), which oversaw the ADR program. And, since the Settlement Agreement, I had many opportunities to work with Rod while he served so capably on the National Administration Committee.

Most recently, I spent 3 days in July 2014 in a Toronto courtroom with Rod, at which the disposition of the records of the Independent Assessment Process was before the court. Despite the seriousness of the legal issues, and strongly held positions, Rod was always insightful, engaging, collegial and friendly.

While I am sure Rod's family knows this, I can testify to the very high regard in which Rod was held, by his colleagues and the judiciary. He brought unparalleled passion and commitment to all of his work, and his clients were very well served by his sage advice and broad knowledge of the law.

I also had the very positive experience of starting the practice of law in the late 1970s, when the Saskatoon Bar was very small - Rod was always generous with his time and well known for his keen wit and unrelenting good humour. He was always willing to provide advice and mentoring to younger lawyers when asked.

In addition to his considerable contributions to the Indian Residential Schools settlement, Rod was also a major figure on the Saskatchewan legal scene, one who will be greatly missed by his many colleagues, friends and admirers.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Rod's family at this difficult time, and to let them know that there are many, many people thinking of them and wishing them well.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Rod's passing. Lorna, I (Sonia) met Rod twenty years ago when he sang at the funeral of my mother-in-law, Lorna Reid, who also passed away on Christmas Day. We were honored that he contributed to the tribute to Lorna with his beautiful singing and it is interesting to read in his obituary that he blessed many a funeral service with his wonderful voice. Bill and I are happy to have had such a great opportunity to have a really good visit with you and Rod in Palm Springs last year. Rod was an accomplished and special man and will be missed by many. Our sincere condolences to you and your family.

We were so sadden to read of Rod's passing. Only a month ago we chatted at the UW Dinner and he shared plans to get away and work on some health challenges. Rod had that special gift of making everyone feel they were close friends and that he really cared how things were in your life. He truly left his mark in our community and the organization he served. Our sincere condolences at this difficult time.

Rod was a very special guy. Not long ago, I saw Rod at city hospital and despite looking weary, he was his usual cheerful and gentlemanly self. He was such fun to sing with in Lorna's choraliers. We were lucky to be a part of it.
To Lorna, and Joe and families, may you find peace and comfort in knowing you have loved a special man. His beautiful voice will enhance any heavenly choir.

I was the organist for Rod at St Jo's for a few years, and also a friend....His friendship was always very special and neverending...including his musical participation at my father's funeral long after we had ever seen each other. I remember most his energy, his humour, his love of life, his musicality, and his generosity. We have lost one of the "great Irish ones".

"Donlevy" a family name that has been music to so many. Leonore sang in Rod"s dad's glee club at STM. My memory goes back to Legal Follies and wannabe musicians like me, were fortunate to have Rod really make it musical!

Our family again touched by "Donlevy" as Rod"s brother Kent taught one of our children. It is obvious from all the talents Rod shared there will be many parishioners from the City who will miss the music he shared at many services.. His family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Lorna & Rod's family & all the extended family. We were so sad to learn of Rod's passing. We've known Rod for years. He was not only a friend but also our lawyer (when we needed him). He was such a friendly, kind person and always cared to ask how we were doing and how life was treating us. We remember years ago, we used to gather at a friends' home to sing Christmas carols; particularly remembering that when we did the 12 Days of Christmas, Rod's & my job was to do "Five golden rings". Needless to say, I was honored to share such a line with a wonderful singer. Rod will be missed by so many and he left his mark in so many lives. Sorry we cannot be there for the funeral but know that we are thinking of you all and that you are in are prayers as you grieve for this wonderful man. Our hearts go out to everyone.
