Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2014.

William J.D. Escher

Bill Escher passed away Monday, May 12, 2014 in Huntsville, AL at the age of 82. Bill had battled valiantly on several health fronts. He died quietly at Huntsville Hospital with family by his side.  He was born December 18, 1931 in Atlanta, GA the son of William and Veeda (Hobart) Escher.  Bill attended Cornell University and was a graduate of George Washington University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Loretta, of Huntsville, AL; four children: daughter Melanie Escher of Glendale, CA; son Daric (Michelle) Escher of Indianapolis, IN; son Justin Escher of Kalamazoo, MI; and daughter Lauryn (Curt) Eisenhower of Ashburn, VA; and nine grandchildren: Evan and Liam Spires; Grant Nail and Griffin Escher; Riston and Halle Escher; Samantha, Reece and Quinn Eisenhower.

He had a long and wonderful career in aerospace spanning more than 60 years. He served in the Army and while he was assigned to Naval Research Laboratory, he was a countdown officer for the Vanguard rocket program in 1957. He was later employed by NASA (Lewis, Marshall, and Headquarters), Marquardt, Kaiser-Marquardt, North American Rockwell and Rocketdyne, Astronautics Corporation of America, University of Toronto, Escher Technology Assoc., Escher-Foster Technology Assoc., SAIC, and SpaceWorks. Additionally, he was a founding member of the International Institute for Hydrogen Energy.

Bill was a tireless champion of combined-cycle propulsion and low-cost reusable space access. He wrote over a hundred technical papers on this subject. In 1988, Bill was awarded the prestigious AIAA George M. Low Space Transportation Award for excellence in the field of space transportation. His Low award citation reads:

"For outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of space transportation, from Vanguard to Spaceliner, and for tirelessly promoting a vision for low cost, reliable access to space based on the Synerjet combined-cycle engine.”

Bill was also a leader in the area of hydrogen energy. He founded Escher Technology Associates, (later Escher-Foster Technology) in 1972 to provide leadership, vision and technical expertise in the development of the hydrogen energy economy. He was a founding member of the International Hydrogen Energy Association.

Bill was also a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts of America having achieved Eagle Scout and served multiple times as a Scout leader.  He was an accomplished athlete running track at both the high school and college level.  His passions included spending time with his family, classical music, gardening, his Porsche 356, and of course, astronomy.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

There will be a memorial service at Magnolia Trace Retirement Community in Huntsville Thursday, May 15th at 2pm. He will be interred in St. Johns, MI.

I first met Bill when he gave a talk to my University of Michigan chemical engineering class. After graduating, I joined the Institute of Gas Technology in Chicago, where, lo and behold, he was a consultant to them and became a mentor to me! His can-do attitude and big thinking were traits I admired. I am sure he is resting in a wonderful peace. I would like to visit St Johns, Michigan some day!

Thank you to all of you for the wonderful memories you've shared with us. I've been passing them all on to my mom, Loretta, and she has really enjoyed hearing from you. Jake and George, thank you for the description of those early times in my dad's life that I didn't hear enough about. Mom absolutely remembers what special friends you were. -Lauryn (Bill's youngest daughter)

Belatedly, I wanted to add to this guest book. Bill and I were great friends, meeting after we were drafted into the Korean War period in 1952 in the electronics school of the Army in Monmouth, NJ. As such a scholar, he was always reading publications on his free time and we labeled him as "Das Book." After that, we were both transferred to Redstone ARPG in Alabama where we spent the remainder of our Army careers There is much more about when we turned over Bill's VW Bug in Tennessee and were pulled out to a site by a black farmer and his tractor. We went on to West Lafayette, IN to a Purdue football game and made it back with help from my family in Indiana.

Bill was a brilliant guy, admired by not only me but my parents when at our Hoosier home. We had an additional connection with his earlier home in St. Johns, MI, very near to my home base connected to Michigan State University.

The parting of Bill is a great loss to me not only as a friend but one who provided me an intellectual exchange in a less than such an environment in the army, on my way, with this interruption, on my way to a PhD and the faculty at Michigan State University.

Rest in Peace, Bill Escher,

Jake Ferris

Friends since 1969! Many memories: 1973, our visit to Bill's ancestral home in Michigan. 1986 and 1988, Two Hamilton weddings. 1993, your visit to the Kern River Valley.

You, Loretta, always passionate about spiritual growth.
Bill, always passionate about traveling through space.
A live-wire blend of wonder, curiosity, idealism, energy and joie de vivre!

Good-by, Mr. Chips. We love you.

I grew up with the amazing Escher Clan. I have such wonderful memories! The intelligence, exuberance, and quirkiness of this family cannot be described. Bill was a thoughtful, kind teacher and he accepted (and often participated in) the madness that runs rampant in our two families. He will always be appreciated, loved and remembered.

I was a close friend of bill at Charlotte Central High School where he built his first rocket.I visited cornell where I stayed at SAE house and we attended the last sports car held through the streets of Watkins Glenn. While assigned to the 51th air force,Strategic Air command, I impressed upon them,as a result of Bills influence, that sac had the capacity to handle ICBM's.It became a reality.George

To Daric, and other members of the Bill Escher family,

I am saddened to learn of Bill's death and miss his presence. Met him first when I studied rocketry at Penn State and enjoyed working with Daric (Bill's rocketeer son) as co-grad-students.

Bill's friendly smile immediately endeared him to so many of us students and young professionsals. And just knowing someone from the early days of spaceflight was inspiring and motivating.

God bless you all,
Daric Escher's friend and classmate,
Shamim.

Bill was a true gentleman. I was privileged to work with Bill in Washington, D.C. at NASA. He would cheerfully go the extra mile to assist engineers such as myself. He was full of wisdom and a friend to all. It was an honor to have known him. May his family be comforted with the love of God.
Respectfully,
Dave Weeks

Dad Escher will always hold a special place in my memories. Besides being impressed with his professional achievements and a great father, I remember his enthusiasm for life. I remember his love of classical music, his booming voice when telling an amusing story and that smile that lit up the room. It is a sad time when a figure that is so larger than life passes away but we can celebrate his life, passions and love for his family. My sympathy to the whole family who I've been blessed to know most of my life. Hugs to Mom Escher.
