William Foote Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2023.
William (Bill) W. Foote, MD, passed away on April 2, 2023. He was born on July 8, 1937 in Los Angeles to Arleth Obed Foote and Gizella Bertha Foote. In 1941, the family moved to El Monte, CA where he and his younger brother John (Bud) were raised. Their many cousins and family friends provided an experience of joyous interpersonal relationships through the years. After graduating from El Monte High School in 1955 and knowing from the time he was in eighth grade that he wanted to be a doctor, Bill went on to study pre-med at La Sierra College and Loma Linda University Medical School where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1963.

Then began Bill's illustrious career as a psychiatrist. He joined the US Navy residency and internship program where he became Chief of Psychiatry at Treasure Island Naval Station. He remained stationed in San Francisco and left the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander upon completing his term.

In 1967, Bill married Margaret (Peggy) Conway. His psychiatry practice was flourishing and Bill and Peggy loved going to art galleries, the opera, eating in fine restaurants and being with their many friends. Bill and Peggy were expert skiers. Most of their marriage was lived in San Francisco. Bill's private practice patients were a top priority for him in his life. While trained in the western ways of psychiatry, he also incorporated transpersonal approaches and techniques which made his practice unique and desirable to many people. He was respected in his field for his work and ahead of his time, authored books on the subject and produced a videotape series.

Bill was beloved by friends, family, and patients for his loving heart, kindness and empathetic, non-judgmental nature. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bill's devoted wife of 56 years Peggy passed away on April 11, 2023. Bill is survived by his brother John Foote (Jacqueline), brother-in-law Peter Conway (Donna) and sister-in-law Diane Conway; nieces Vicki Galvani and Kay Conway, step-nieces Debra Fike and Lorri Marie O'Keefe, nephews John Foote, Michael Conway, Kevin Conway, Eric Conway, and step-nephew Mark Frey; and Conway great-nieces Kathryn, Lauren and Brooke, and great-nephew Christopher.

Bill was one of the most amazing people I have ever met. He first counseled my girlfriend and I in the 90's and quickly became a friend and mentor. He helped me with my personal life, my business life, and later saved my daughter from an extremely difficult medical situation. He was compassionate, understanding, and was incredibly practical and down to earth with his no nonsense advice. It has been a year now but I still think of him often and wish he were still part of my life. I hope he is enjoying his time with the elephants he loved so much.

Bill and Peggy's passing is devastating news. I first saw him professionally in 1979 and over the years we became friends. What a wonderful man and a devoted doctor. He helped me through many of life's big struggles and I'm not sure that I would have made it through them without his help and guidance. I keep hoping that their passing isn't true, although logically I know it is. Thank you for all you did for me.

I was his patient in Albuquerque in 2006-2007. He was very professional and helped me tremendously. I´m so sorry to learn of his passing, as well as that of his wife only 9 days later. RIP

Just became aware of the passing of Bill, a truly loving and caring man. Both he and Peggy became lovely friends. So sad hearing of them both passing. I was with Bill March 11th, and within a month both gone. My heart´s broken. My deepest condolences. Rest in peace Bill & Peggy.

I have it on good authority that Bill and Peggy are attending Pottery classes with Viola Frey in their next great adventure. We all miss them so much but feel their joy at being free to fly.

I met Bill later in life and envy those fortunate enough to have spent so many years with him. From our first meeting, Bill got me. Bill knew me. It´s as though we´d worked together for years. He was charming, intuitive, brilliant, loving - truly one of a kind. Bill walked with me through the most painful period of my life, the loss of my daughter, my only child. He encouraged my art career, praising my talent, often guiding me and reading deeper meaning into my work. My heart is shattered. But I know Bill has gone beyond the veil, into the light, flying free. Godspeed, precious Bill. Attaching a photo of a painting he loved.

Bill you will be missed so much. He was so caring to return a call, listen to your life, entertain in his beloved Bay Area, and Help so many around the world. A warm kind soul that made you feel special. Are family loved him so much thru out the years of many holidays in Stockton and Tracy. Will miss you so much Uncle Bill. I´m sure you´re having a delicious beverage on a beautiful beach somewhere.

I only knew Dr. Foote for a short while. None the less, his wisdom and insight have left an indelible footprint (Foote?!) on my heart and soul. I miss him.
