My Daddy was my mentor in spiritual things. He taught me to live my life according to the Beatitudes recorded in the gospel of Matthew. From Daddy, I also learned the art of storytelling. I learned about watching people's eyes to see if your story was making an impact on them. A funny story, a sad story or an altar call were all important. No one could tell a story better than Daddy with just the right mix of facts, some humor and heart rending detail. A memorable conclusion was sure to follow.

Daddy learned to live passionately, love completely, learn humbly and leave boldly creating a legacy that will impact many for years to come.

About ten years ago, I was pouring my heart out to Daddy. We talked about Abba Father meaning Daddy and since that time I have called my earthly father, "Daddy."

Daddy was a busy man. Because of that, we all have regrets regarding our limited family time together. Even in death, we did not have alone time with him for his family of friends kept pouring in to pay their respects and say, "Until we meet again." Though this amazing demonstration of love and kindness, we were reminded of how many lives Daddy touched and what a difference he made to so many. His laughter, his tears , his stories, his work and his love will always be remembered. We were taking pictures when something tickled Daddy and he shared his last trademark big laughs with us. We will love and remember you always!

Daddy's Big Girl,
Alice Elisabeth

To the Gale Family: Just wanted to say how much we have appreciated knowing our wonderful friend, Bro. Gale. His passion for missions, love for the native people, common horse-sense approach to old time religion, and his enlarged heart of compassion will linger in our memory for years to come. Farewell faithful comrade in the faith. John and Yvonne Betters

Dear Aunt Alice, I was so sorry to hear that your Dad had passed away. I didn't know him well, but my Dad talked about him, and had the greatest respect for him. I pray that the peace and comfort of God will be with you, as Heaven rejoices that another saint has arrived Home. We love you!

Farewell Bro. Gale. It was a honor knowing you. I cherish my memories of the years I spent with you and your family at Brainerd; the summer I travelled with all of you when you lost Mary Alice, the jokes you played on me, sending me to Brother Hoppers to borrow his "sky hook". You made me feel like "family" and treated me the same. You taught me so many things about life and family that guide me still. See you on the other side.

My Grandpa, Rev. WIlliam D. Gale went to be with Jesus yesterday. He was 92.
while he was known across the world for his amazing testimony , teacher, ptracher and missionary. He was just my Grandpa and I was his Shelbell. He prayed with me many times and I sang to him "He Touched Mr". He was so proud of me when I graduated from Azusa Pacific University. He also helped to marry Kevin and I. Grandpa stressed the importance of living our life so others could see Jesus.. I am determined to live my life so I can join him in Heaven..I know he is enjoying seeing His Saviours face. He is also singing with the angels only now he is singing in tune. I can't wait to hear my Grandpa!

February 21, 2013

We first met Bro. Gale in the early 1990's when we moved to Indiana to attend Union Bible College, where he was mission department chairman. We formed an immediate bond with Bro. and Sis. Gale as they came to Westfield to teach mission classes. Bro. Gale's practical ministry, flowing out of decades of ministry experiences, simply was one teaching story after another and modeled Jesus' practical lessons. Bro. Gale always lived in tremendous expectant faith and could testify to multitudes of experiences where great faith was awarded with what he had expected the Lord to accomplish. We learned a great lesson one day when Bro. Gale chided us about a mission trip we were planning with the youth to go to South Dakota. Not many young people were showing interest and we told Bro. Gale that it did not look like the trip was going to happen, and he said, “We're going on that trip if it isn't but one of us!” Though he was very serious, he was loving and displayed his faith that the project was going to happen. Later, a dozen or more students took the trip.
Bro. Gale was a personal mentor for me (Tim) as we traveled together and learned about God's great (co)mission. One time Bro. Gale asked me to drive him to Massilon, Ohio, where we was to speak at a Christmas service there at the church. He was sick and felt very badly, but he insisted upon going and napped most of the way. When we arrived he still was feverish and vomiting. He went to bed, slept, and awoke on Sunday a little rested but still weak. He prepared for service, preached with strength, and later stated that the Lord gave him strength just to minister at the service.
Our family spent many days and nights visiting Bro. & Sis. Gale's home at Edinburgh, Indiana. Sometime we would stop there on our way to Alabama to visit family, but at Gales we were already at “home”. They always cleared their garage to allow us to get our vehicle in out of the weather. They always insisted that our children call them grandma and grandpa (our two youngest children, Timothy and Leah were dedicated to the Lord by Bro. Gale at a sweet service at Ada Chapel Bible Methodist Church). We played games and even helped work around the house. Not long ago there was a problem with a leak on the roof. Bro. Gale asked us to check it and if we could fix it. We got the tools and materials and started the work, but at 85 or 86 Bro. Gale was right up there on the roof doing what he could!
The greatest times were prayer and meals at Gales. Prayer was always simple and as if Jesus were exactly right there and Bro. Gale was speaking to the greatest friend. That was amazing! Sometimes at meals discussion would turn to events past and the Gales would talk about someone involved in some experience. Bro. Gale would be speaking along, telling the story very methodically, but occassionally he would come to the point where he could not remember the name of the person involved in the story. At these times he would regularly appeal to Sis. Gale to come to his aid and usually she would extend to him the name of the person he was trying to remember. But on one sweet occasion Bro. Gale appealed to Sis. Gale and she responded, not being able to remember either, “Well, if you give me about five minutes, I'll tell you!”
What a joy it has been to be student to Bro. Gale, a friend of this dear follower of Jesus. We love the Gales and still support Sis. Gale and the entire family as they prepare to make official celebration for the greatest award of Bro. Gale's faith.
Bro. Gale you are missed so dearly as we all remember the life you shared and sacrificed to witness the love of Jesus to us and the world you labored for.

He was "Bill Gale" to our family. He and my dad, Ken Harris, were great friends. They worked hard, prayed much, accomplished much and enjoyed many fun experiences. Bill was a significant godly man in my childhood.
We spent many working days on campus at Brainerd. We had many family times since his 4 children matched the 4 in our family. Bill had a great sense of humor - he and dad interacted with many practical jokes.
Bill made our lives richer.

Gayle and me (Darylin) just read about Bro. Gale's passing and we want to express our condolences to the family for your loss. We knew him in South Dakota at the Brainerd Indian School, we were just young kids. But I remember how when he would laugh he would hug himself, and I have his book.
A great man who impressed even two small girls!

A Four Star General has slipped from our ranks and won his last battle with great victory! Brother Gale had a tremendous influence upon our lives! We loved the MAN, loved his MESSAGE, and loved his MANNER. He was an inspiration around the world....A highlight of our life was having him and Sister Gale live with us three weeks in the Philippines, when he was building a dorm on the Bible Methodist Campus and then entertaining him in our home in Papua New Guinea! He left footprints upon our heart that we will always treasure! Our deepest sympathy is extended to his dear family! ~ In Loving Memory, Bob and Barb Brock

To the family of Rev. William Gale.

Deepest sympathy to each one of you. I didn't know Bro. Gale very long, but the time spent talking with him was very special. I was a complete stranger to him, but he treated me like he'd known me forever. This was at God's Bible School Camp Meeting about 10 years ago. My sister was with me, but other than her, I knew no one. I trust our precious Lord will be very near each one of you during this time.

Sincerely,

Dear Grandpa Gale,

I am saddened as I write my final postcard to you. As you know I generally started with the line - hope you had a good week. Well . . . you just had the most awesome week of your life. I am sure others will recall the commitment and dedication of Reverend William Gale and rightfully so. But we will miss Grandpa Gale. Sharing the pew with you at church, and hearing you scotch the preacher on, seeing you weep with those praying at the altar, sitting at the kitchen table after service and shaking with laughter as you re-galed us with stories of which we never tired, hearing you slurp your coffee and soup, learning from you to pour milk on our ice cream - such wonderful memories. Thank you, Grandpa Gale, for being a part of our lives. And to you, Grandma Gale, we would like to say, you are an incredible help meet and we love you!

PS: Grandma Gale, the postcards will keep coming to you!

My condolences go out to Rev. Gale's wife and family and I will keep them in my prayers.
I first met Rev William Gale November 1948 when I was 14 yrs. old and my parents Paul and Bessie Gilmore moved from Miltonvale, KS to the Brainerd Indian Training School in Hot Springs, SD. to be missionaries to the Indians. Rev. Gale was the pastor at the Hot Springs Wesleyan Church. The Indian School hauled all the students to the church in Hot Springs, SD. Rev. Gale was a wonderful minister and all the young people thought the world of him.
Rev Gale was a special person and he loved everyone and showed it in his life.
Some of the things I remember of him were our hunting trips and working together.

To most of you who visit this site, he is Brother Gale or "Chief Hugs Himself". To me he is Uncle William, a man of God and a devoted leader to his family and his extended family.

He sometimes got the best of me in a game of "horse" on my basketball court as I was growing up, but I was the better golfer!

Uncle William lived out the Great Commission, taking the story of God's Love to "the uttermost parts of the Earth" and teaching us all to "love the Lord our God.." and "Our neighbors as ourselves.." in everything we do.

His leadership and mentoring will be missed by all of us, family and friends. May comfort and grace surround your family at this time of loss.

What a "prince of a man" was Bro. Gale. He made holiness so attractive. I loved reading his books that he gave me. I always looked forward to him coming to our church and telling us about missions. When I became a missionary I wanted to help win souls to Christ as he did. I could never meet that goal but he gave me a passion for the lost.I remember our little brass Indian head that we put our buffalo nickles in for Bro. Gale and missions. I always enjoyed coming back to Shelbyville and listening to him talk around the Smith's dinner table. I was able to visit him in the nursing home and he continued to live and breathe holiness even in his sickness. Chief Hugs Himself has entered into heaven and has been hugged by our Chief - Jesus. Can't wait to see you again, Bro. Gale. Praying for Sis. Gale and the family that the God of all comfort will be with you.

Rev. William Gale made a big difference in my life. He and his precious wife, Alice, had taken me to their hearts when I was yet a young single pastor and Bible College teacher.
He solemnized my wedding and bought the pig for the wedding party. When my marriage was on the brink to collapse, he cried with me, prayed and counseled and sustained my spirit. When the marriage was finally shattered, he was like a mother hen, spreading wings to cover me under its wings. He hauled all my earthly belongings to the campus and nursed me back to spiritual health. My five- year old daughter called him fondly as "Lolo Gale" (grandfather Gale.
The first congregation I planted had received a land donation for church. We thought of building a bamboo chapel. Rev. Gale wrote from the States asking, "Could I please use your name to raise fund for a church building for your congregation?" I don't know how he knew that we were in need and had been praying for this. And so the Solid Rock Bible Methodist Church was constructed through that fund.
The last time he traveled back to the Philippines, he officially broke the ground for the National Headquarters at Alibagu, Ilagan, Isabela, Philippines. He prayed: "Lord, if I get home to heaven before the national office building is finished , will you please allow me to peep from heaven to get a glimpse of what this place will become." My tears were falling at his words. He was already weak and had to be supported by three big men to reach the middle of the ascending terrain.
We drove home with the group of Rev. Gale and Rev. Parker when he said "Dorothy (my daughter) is a very special child to me. Her son (less than one- year old Chris Gabriel) is also special to me. I feel honored to dedicate him to the Lord." We went home to Cauayan with Rev. Gale and the group and had an instant dedication ceremony. Christopher, Dorothy's husband fussed on serving biscuits and bottled coke to celebrate the great occasion.
Rev. Gale- a great man o God. His words come ringing back to me when I thanked him for his contribution to my life! "My only gift is the gift of love." He made the difference in my life.

When Tim and I were preparing to go to the Philippines as missionaries, the Gale's invited us to their home. We spent the night and stayed up late talking. We learned so much from them and were given much wisdom and encouragement about missionary life. Bro. Gale was so winsome and kind. Sis. Alice is an amazing example of sweet godliness.

Wanda and I wish to add our words of admiration for this outstanding man of God, Rev. William Gale. Bro. Gale made holiness winsome and attractive, and a man of greater love could not be found. Many were the times I shared pulpit responsibilities with him and he was a total delight to be around. I loved him, respected him, and aspired to be more like him. "Well done" will certainly be some of the first words he will hear from the Master, and we will surely miss him here.

One of my Heros has crossed the finish line!!!! He set a pace for me as a young missionary that I have never forgotten. I have never reached the mark either but I continue to strive. Thank you Bro. Gale for leaving such a clear path for us that follow behind.

So sorry for the family, but so happy for Bro. Gale. HE is dancing on the streets of gold. May God bless and encourage the family since they do know where he is and that they can go to meet him. I have so enjoyed the many times I have had the opportunity to hear him preach, talk, and share his life's work.

Through the years we always enjoyed William & Alices visits and getting to hear him give devotions and the occasional serman! He had such a love for the Lord and for all of us! He was so fun loving and so subtle with his zingers and puns that sometimes we didn't even realize how funny he was till later when you thought about it again!! My thoughts & prayers are with the family and especially cousin Alice.
