William "Billy" George Gettys

A lifelong resident of Arabi, Louisiana, the family of William "Billy" George Gettys is heartbroken to announce his sudden passing on the afternoon of Sunday, July 27. Billy leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and friendship that touched everyone who knew him.

Born on October 6, 1962, to Florence Schmit Gettys and Charles William Gettys, Billy lived a life marked by generosity and a deep devotion to his family, friends, and community. He was a proud graduate of Chalmette High School, Class of 1980. Billy began his career as a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local Union No. 1846 eventually opening his own company -- Gettys Roofing and Construction, where he built not just homes, but lifelong relationships.

Outside of work, Billy had a passion for fishing, cooking, hunting, and giving back. He was especially known for his famous boils, often volunteering his time and culinary skills to support community events and fundraisers. His warm spirit and infectious enthusiasm made everyone feel welcome at the table or the bar at his favorite local establishments. Billy lived and loved both large and loud, and his absence will be deeply felt.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Tammy Christen Gettys; his devoted son, Adam Gettys (Nicole Howard); and two beautiful grandchildren who were the light of his life, Rylee Mae and Ryder Charles. He also leaves behind his siblings: Charles "Chuck" (Eileen) Gettys; Tammy Gettys (Mark) Abide; and Flo Ellen Sanchez (Dan) Rickard; and stepsisters Nancy Sanchez (Joe) Dickens and Bonnie Sanchez (Gene) Durnin; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Billy is preceded in death by his much-loved and missed daughter, Gabrielle Mae; his parents, Florence Schmit Gettys Sanchez and Charles William Gettys; stepfather, Allen S. Sanchez; in-laws Shirley and Charles (Big Head) Christen; his sister, Judy Gettys (Kurt) Faust; and stepbrother Allen J. (Bernadette) Sanchez.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be announced in the coming months. In lieu of flowers during this most difficult time, memorial donations in Billy's name may be made directly to the family.
