William Carleton Gibson

I was saddened to learn of the loss of Bill Gibson. One of the special pleasures of working at McGill and with its alumni was the opportunity to meet Bill and spend time with him. His gentle demeanor but firmly stated opinions, in person and by letter, revealed a generous and kind-hearted man who cared deeply about the world and its people. Bill had a special appreciation of the role of institutions in our lives and communities and did so much to support and strengthen those that were important to him. We at McGill will miss him dearly.

Our deepest sympathy to Gibson family from all the staff of Cadboro Bay Peoples Pharmacy. We were very fortunate to serve Dr Gibson right to the end, he has touched all my staff. We all have very many fond memories of him, one I would like to share: every year he would bring beautiful roses from his garden, these were special breed, all my customers would comment on their size & smell.
My Pharmacy staff, front store cashiers, post office staff all of them knew him as Dr Gibson, we all pray to All Mighty that Dr Gibson's soul may rest in eternal peace, Ameen.

My deepest sympathies to all of the Gibson family, and to those that shared in Dr. Bill's life. You can be so proud of what your Dad contributed to this world and I know that his spirit lives on in his children. For some moments there are no words, so I will share something that Kahil Gibran said:"When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight". My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I have fond memories of the Gibson family on Wesbrook and enjoyed reading of Dr. Bill's life many parts of which I was not familiar. But do children running around UHill ever really know the adults in their midst. Kate, Dave & Ian your Dad sounds like he didn't waste anytime in his very full life. I will be thinking of you all over these tough days of good-byes.

Some memories of Bill Gibson were of his stance in a group; a conference or just a gathering of friends, listening with an attentive, alert expression, ready to agree and add, or to pounce and firmly demolish ill thought out theories. I can still bring to mind his delighted look when he had successfully used one of his great fund of stories to make his point. He was a person who really put his talent to the service of his community. and by doing so added a great deal to its strengths.

I am so sorry tto hear of Dr. Bill's passing. He was a good friend of my father, Ian Ross, as they had attended McGill together. Through the years they shared many funny stories and remained good friends. I was honored that Bill extended his friendship to me after my father's passing, and I saw him many times at The Butchart Gardens, a place he loved. I shall miss his kindness, humour, and wise council.

I am saddened to hear of Bill's passing, but very pleased to have known him. I first met him in 1946 when he retired from the RCAF as a Wing Commander.I was interested in Medicine and he encouraged me to pursue this goal. Oddly, we both did research at the Institute of Aviation medicine in Toronto, only decades apart. I met him again in Victoria when he was Chancellor at University of Victoria. He was an erudite but kindly man who gave freely of himself.
He will be sadly missed by many Canadians. However, he has left a great legacy. Dr. Ian Buckingham

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Bill Gibson. He was my professor of medical history at UBC from 1956-60.I remember well, his inspiring lectures. Coincidentally he attended grade school with my mother ( Mary Galloway ) at North Ward school. She says he was the smartest student in the class. My mother used to walk to school with his sister Isobel. I still have several of Bills' books that he gave to me when we dined together at the Victoria Golf Club a few years ago.
