Dr. William "Bill" Grillo

Dr. William "Bill" Grillo, 90, of Prospect St.. Willimantic died Tuesday, (May 14, 2002) at St. Joseph Living Center. The son of the late Rosario and Maria (Cardamone) Grillo, he was born at home on November 23, 1911 in Utica, NY. The first member of his family to attend college. He worked his way through Hamilton College and Rochester Medical School during the Depression. He was one of the first anesthesiology specialists in the country. He worked at Grasslands Hospital in New York, where he met and married his wife of 49 years, the late Florence (Milligan) Grillo. He later worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury for ten years, and at Windham Community Memorial Hospital from 1957 to 1985. Bill was a communicant of St Joseph's Church, Willimantic. He was a founding member of Anesthesia Association of Willimantic, and belonged to the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and several other professional organizations. He wrote numerous clinical papers, and invented several specialized tools to assist his fellow anesthesiologists in the care of patients, at no monetary gain to himself. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann Nagy of Chaplin, and three sons, William Grillo and his wife, Carol of Windham, Robert Grillo and his wife, Rebecca of Windham and Richard Grillo of Willimantic; a sister, Angeline Alam of Utica, NY; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and numerous special friends at St Joseph Living Center, where he had resided since 1994. He was predeceased by his wife Florence in 1992; a son, David in 1968 and a brother and sister in New York. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St., Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 7-9 p.m. and again on Saturday, from 9-9:30 a.m. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic.
