William HAWES Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Nov. 12, 2016.
HAWES, William Muir
Retired Lieutenant-Commander, RCN
Passed away peacefully on October 28, 2016 at the age of 70 in Ottawa. Son of the late Elizabeth Simpson Muir and William Thomas Hawes. Bill was born and raised in Montreal where he attended McGill University and graduated from Sir George Williams with a Science degree, majoring in Math and Physics. He will be dearly missed by his half- brother, Douglas Hawes and nephew Barrie Hawes in London, Ontario, cousin Alex Lamoureux in Fox Point, Wisconsin and great-niece Lauren Dawe in Calgary, Alberta, along with many good friends in Canada and the United States. As a Combat Systems Engineer in the RCN, Bill spent much of his adventure-filled career on submarines. It allowed him to see the world, including an exchange with the Royal British Navy and deployment in the Arctic Circle during the Cold War. Described by his Commander as an unfailing futurist, an inquisitive and intensely analytical individual who had a remarkable ability with sophisticated computer systems. When Bill retired from the Navy in 1985, he joined Lockheed Martin, the global aerospace, defense, security and advanced technologies company. He remained at Lockheed Martin for 25 years until retirement in 2011. It was here that he made and retained many special friends. Bill will always be remembered as a caring and thoughtful individual with a wonderful sense of humour. In spite of many health challenges, Bill remained an independent person focused on the world around him. There will be a special celebration of Bill's life in the spring.

Dear Bill, you were one of those shipmates I will never forget. Glad to have sailed, stood watch with you, and to have been a travelling companion on occasion when we served in submarines. I fondly recall an escapade or two as well. Bill, I will miss your great sense of humour. Prayers.

I remember the first time I met Bill so many years ago. Sarcastic, sceptical, and so friendly and helpful to everyone he met. A man who's heart was as big as his smile. Deep condolences to the entire family. Rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear of Bill's passing, and my deepest condolences to his family. I knew him from our time in submarines, and had many interesting chats on these new-fangled 'computers' just becoming popular. Always a gentleman, and with a ready smile. Rest in peace, shipmate.

Sorry to hear of the passing if Bill. I sailed with him on Okanagan and he was onboard Okanagan during the "Grey Rover Crunch" on 28th July 1973. I remember him for his professionalism and humour. Also worked with him at Paramax/Lockheed Martin and Frigate building days. Rest in Peace Bill, you left way to soon.

In all the years I knew Bill I never met anyone who didn't like him. He was highly regarded by fellow engineers at Paramax(Lockheed-Martin) and a great guy to be around.

Bill was a very special individual who had a great love and respect for all life. We became an admirer and a friend because of his deep regard for wildlife.
