William Henry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2025.
William Heath Henry, 96, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025 surrounded by his wife and children, in Norfolk, Virginia, the city where he was born on October 18, 1928. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and public servant, William-known to many as Bill-lived a life marked by unwavering integrity, quiet strength, and deep love for his family.

Bill graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk before continuing his education at Bluefield College and the University of Tennessee. His academic journey laid the foundation for a distinguished career in federal service. For 37 years, he worked with dedication and diligence at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center, ultimately retiring as the Deputy Director of Provisions. His work ethic was matched only by his commitment to ensuring that his family had every opportunity to thrive.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Bill served as a paratrooper in the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division. His military service reflected his lifelong sense of duty and discipline-qualities that would define both his professional and personal life.

Bill's greatest devotion was to his family. He shared 70 loving years of marriage with Carol Jacobson Henry, the love of his life. Their bond was unshakable; even during hospital stays late in life, Bill's first request was always for his wedding ring-a symbol of their enduring connection. Together they raised three children: James Henry (Linda Patterson), Thomas Henry, and Ellen Silva (Dave). Bill took immense pride in being a father and grandfather to Hannah Henry (John Hall), Joshua Henry, Lily Henry, Teamir Silva, and Lidetu Silva. He is also survived by Lily's mother, Dana Beacham Henry, nieces Susan Taliaferro, Robin Church, Devon Mandaleris and Jennifer Sale and their families.

He worked tirelessly to provide not just for his family's needs but also for their dreams-ensuring college educations, planning vacations that created lasting memories, and offering experiences that enriched their lives. Every spare moment outside of work was spent investing in those he loved most. Whether it was quietly supporting each child in their unique pursuits or simply being present with steadfast affection, Bill made sure each member of his family felt cherished.

His commitment to community mirrored his devotion at home. A longtime member of Oaklette United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, Bill lived out his faith through action. He sang in the church choir until the pandemic made gatherings unsafe and remained active on mission trips well into his 80s. He also served on the Pastor Parish Committee-a testament to both his leadership and spiritual dedication.

Bill gave generously of his time beyond church walls as well. For 14 years he supported local school bands as a band booster-including serving as president-and was an involved Boy Scout parent. These roles allowed him to support not only his own children but also countless others in their growth and development.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Henry and Hazel Heath Henry; and by his sister Shirley Jean Wynn.

Those who knew Bill remember him as a wise and loving man who led by example rather than words. He showed love not through grand gestures but through daily acts of care-working long hours so others wouldn't have to worry later; planning ahead so that when he was gone, everything would be okay; living deliberately so that those around him could live fully.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Memorial Contributions may be made to Oaklette United Methodist Church or another organization of your choice.

May William Heath Henry's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well lived-with purpose, humility, and boundless love.
