William Horning Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2013.
On the morning of Saturday, June 22, 2013, well-known Troy resident William Jason Horning passed away quietly at Troy Community Hospital. He was 86 years of age.

Born in Columbia Cross Roads on Dec. 27, 1926, he was the son of William and Julia (Murray) Horning. Known to family and friends as "Jake," he was a graduate of Troy High School. He was married to the former Doris Ward, and together they raised two sons. For 33 years Jake owned and operated Horning's ARCO and Sporting Goods on Canton Street in Troy. As a businessman, he used to sponsor a local softball team as well. He was a longtime resident of Armenia Township and served as township supervisor for several years.

In addition to the responsibilities of operating a business and administering the local government, Jake gave of himself in other ways. Innumerable snowmobilers and four-wheeler drivers will always remember him for his kind generosity and hospitality, as his place on the mountain was open to them 24/7 for them to warm up and take refreshment.

Jake was an avid hunter and a dyed-in-the-wool Dodgers fan. From their days at Ebbet's Field in Brooklyn to their present home in Los Angeles, he was loyal to the blue come rain or shine. Jake was also a man with a quiet, subtle faith who knew his Lord and Savior on a very private and personal level. Last Saturday when the Lord took his hand, Jake quietly and peacefully when home with Him.

Jake is survived by his son, Gary (Beth) Horning of Troy; sisters, Nancy Merritt of Troy and Marsha Chappell of Tioga; grandchildren, Thad (Sheri) Horning of Florida, Christina Signor of Troy, Jason (Dannielle) Horning of Virginia, Jared (Cindy) Horning of Lancaster, Pa.; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and son, Randy.

In accordance with Jake's wishes there will be a graveside service at the convenience of the family. Those wishing to honor Jake's memory may direct memorial contributions to the Olde Covert Church, c/o Brenda L. Brewer, 365 Farmers Valley Road, Troy, PA 16947. Professional services have been entrusted to Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, 94 N. Center St., Canton.
