BOTTRILL, William (John)
November 13, 1937 – May 8, 2015
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Bottrill, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle. John passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Lions Gate Hospital following a fierce but brief journey with cancer. He will be missed dearly by his loving 'wife and best friend', Gladys; sons, Dan (Sue) and Doug (Laurie); daughter, Cathy; grandchildren, Jason, Sean, Amanda, Brandon, Lucas, and Colton; brother-in-law Frank Funston; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his father, Charles ("Jack") and his mother, Millicent. John was born and raised in Mount Forest, Ontario, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Gladys (Adams). Their marriage of 56 years was filled with love, laughter, and wonderful adventures. John's strong work ethic was instilled at an early age working alongside his father in the family butcher shop. He enjoyed a long and successful career in retail, joining the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Toronto shortly after graduation and later moving his young family out west, where he managed the Vancouver store until 1977. John had a talent for business and was recognized as one of the youngest managers, setting record sales year after year. John understood the importance of work/life balance. He worked hard and played hard; he loved sports, travelling with his family, and exploring the great outdoors. At 40, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to strike out on his own, owning and operating two successful businesses: Carousel Toys & Gifts (Cloverdale) and later Varsity Variety (Point Grey). John retired at the age of 50 to relax and enjoy life, a decision of which he was always proud. He spent those years doing everything he loved, spending time with his kids, grandkids, and many friends, travelling, gardening, entertaining, and of course, playing golf with his best friend, Gladys. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks for the kind and compassionate care given by Dr. Paul Sugar, Dr. Paul Klimo, and Dr. Andrezej Buczkowski, as well as attending nurses, Nancy and Kam. In keeping with John's wishes, a private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. If you wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
