William Lee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 21 to Jul. 22, 2010.
LEE, William (Bill) CKOY/CKBY- CFMO retired A golden voice from a golden era of Ottawa radio has signed off for the last time. Surr-ounded by his devoted family, Bill Lee passed away peacefully on Sunday July 18, 2010 after a stubborn battle with cancer. He was 79. Over four decades, generations grew up listening to The Bill Lee Show on CKOY/CKBY-FM and CFMO-FM. His beautiful voice was a comforting part of the Ottawa landscape. But his best work was done at home, raising six children (and spoiling sixteen grandchildren). A very public person on the air but a very private man at home, his greatest joy was the simple pleasure of being with family. Bill - husband of Doreen (Croswell); father of Mark (Carol), Roger (Kathy), Dean (Kellie), Janine (Bill), Nancy (Ken), Tara (Mark); Cherished Grandfather of Dane, Blair and Jasmine; Michael, Joey and Susy; Connor and Spencer; Billy and Julia; Amy Allison and Amanda; Jordan, Emilee and Tyler. Predeceased by his mother, Eliza Jane Plecan. Survived by his two sisters, Mary White and Grace Jones and his stepsister Donna Schofield (Mal). The family would like to thank Dr. Bencze, Dr. Laurie, Dr. Agboola, Dr. Hurdon and the wonderful nurses at the Ottawa General Hospital and Bayshore Home Care. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave., at Richmond Rd. Friday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at the Glen Cairn United Church, 140 Abbeyhill Dr., Kanata on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre. "Come on Sam we're going home."

Dear Mark, and the Lee family:
Heather and I were saddened to learn of your Dad's passing. Back in 65 I spent a couple of weeks working under Hal Anthony in the newsroom at CKOY. I was a really green broadcaster fresh out of the Maritimes. At Hal's urging, your Dad tried to teach me to be an announcer. I learned a lot, but was sent back East to minors for more seasoning. I finally got back to Ottawa in '71. Your Dad was warm, generous and a complete pro. We will all miss him! Mike Duffy

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Bill. I have such fond memories of gathering with your family to watch football games so many years ago. I will always remember his kindness, gentleness and humour, not to mention his radio show (don't tell anyone - he would often bring me record albums from the station!). I can still hear his voice today. God bless.

Mark,
Your mom & dad were fixtures at Ravens’ home games as well as those in Montreal & Kingston. You’d always go over afterwards to acknowledge their support and thank them for the guys. You were well brought up because of their influence, and you made sure you were around to comfort him when the end was near; no parent can ask for more.
Your dad was a good listener & had time for us anytime we came around, with that grin on his face & sparkle in his eye. He will be sorely missed.
My deepest sympathies to the entire Lee family and those friends & colleagues that share your loss.

My sincere condolences to the Lee Family. I had the opportunity to meet Bill through his son's Roger and Dean, and his son's in-law Ken and Mark, when we played fastball together in the Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League. Bill, including the rest of his family, were almost guaranteed to be in the stands throughout most of the season rooting for our team. Admiration goes a long way for a true fan. May memories like this bring you comfort in knowing that he was very much your fan and to all those he touched. Very saddened to hear of your loss.

Doreen, I can't express my sorrow enough to you and your family for your loss. I will certainly miss Bill and his sense of humor ... who else will complain to me about the "unbuttered bread to the corners, or how stingy I was with the egg salad" ... only Bill! I will also miss the the fun chats we had about our Ottawa Senators! I can honestly say that it was an honor to know such a kind and caring and person and will never forget him. My prayers, love and thoughts are with you and your children and also to Bill's sisters Mary and Grace. God Bless!

A truly great family man and a wonderful broadcaster .Bill taught me alot to begin my broadcasting career in Ottawa. We would talk about the buisness and life in general at the richmond road studios of CKOY-CKBY.After Bills retirement i would still run into him at the supermarket and talk about his kids and many grandchildren he so dearly loved. We will miss you Bill and that voice. Our prayers go out to all of the family.
