Without a doubt, Dr. Martel was the most influential person during my graduate education. In fact, if it weren't for his mentorship, advice, and willingness to help, I would not have graduated. He will be greatly missed.

Bill was a very special person and those of us lucky enough to have him as a friend or colleague were especially blessed. Anne and I send our condolence to the family. He leaves a hole in our life.

Thanks for your kindness and positivity, Professor Martel. You will be missed more than you realize.

While other faculty ran for the hills as I struggled to assemble a doctoral committee, Bill asked me one day if I needed an extra reader. That is the kind of person that he was, and that we have lost.

A great teacher and mentor, Professor Martel touched many lives and will be missed by his students. Grateful for his instruction and that our paths crossed in this journey on earth. May he rest in peace.

A jolly professor and great communicator with a genuine smile that is hard to forget.

Bill was one of my favorite and most inspiring professors and I will miss him dearly. I feel blessed to have studied with and been mentored by him. May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted in their loss.

There will never be another. He was an amazing person, professor and role model. There wasn't a student who met him that didn't look up to him, respected him and believed every single work he said. He was definitely an angel amongst us who taught us, loved us and now is shinning above us. Sincere condolenses to his family.

I always looked forward to seeing Bill every 5 years at our St Anselm reunions. He was a bright, warm and interesting classmate. We are so sorry to learn of his passing. May his family be surrounded by his love, strength and wisdom.

While we mourn his loss, Bill's dedicated efforts and caring nature have left behind a great legacy. His work and that of the thousands of students he taught, developed and mentored will continue to make meaningful impacts on the Nation's security well into the future. May God bless his family during this difficult time and may God grant Bill eternal rest and peace.

Professor Martel was such a great guy. He couldn't walk ten yards at Fletcher without engaging students. Always made himself available to share his wisdom and to listen and learn from students. He tried to pursuade me to ski at Sugarloaf instead of Sunapee. I'll have to go now and ski a few runs in his honor!!

An amazing professor that brightened every classroom. His class was one of my Fletcher favorites. Sincere condolescenes to his family.

Professor Martel was such a vigorous, positive force in the universe. I learned so much from him as a student, but more than facts, I learned how to get others to be enthusiastic about policy. I liked him so much I took four of his classes at Fletcher 2012-2014. I mourn for his family, his friends, and the world, because he made it a brighter place.

A bright light has been extinguished on earth, but a new star is now shining in Heaven.

I've never met a more caring, kind, charismatic and genuinely good-hearted professor who so clearly lived his values in the classroom. I hope to continue Professor Martel's legacy in my future roles as an educator and policy-maker.

America has lost an incredible intellect and a man of great humanity. I was on the Romney campaign with Bill, but he became a friend because of his genuine warmth. I will miss Bill more than words can say.
