MILLAR WILLIAM FREDERICK
87, died June 20, at Valley Care at Masonic in Sewickley. He was born on April 23, 1925 to the late Edward A. and Katharine (Stedem) Millar in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After serving as a paratrooper in the Army during World War II, he graduated in 1950 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His wife of 56 years, the late Jean (Tucker) Millar, died in January of this year. He began his professional career with Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went on to work for advertising agencies in New York and Cleveland. He moved to Pittsburgh to work for Ketchum, McLeod & Grove. Subsequently, he founded a number of businesses in Pittsburgh including The Pewter Mug and 3 Lions restaurants, Walt Harper's Attic, and Commerce Travel, one of the first agencies focused exclusively on the specialized requirements of corporate travel. Mr. Millar was a member of Allegheny Country Club and the Duquesne Club. For many years, he served on the board of D.T. Watson Rehabilitation Hospital, now The Watson Institute. With the late Gerald Bush, he co-founded the D.T. Watson Pro-Am golf tournament, now in its 32nd year. His love of golf and respect for women's amateur golf led him to chair the 1990 Women's Mid-Amateur national championship, held at Allegheny Country Club (and won by Carol Semple Thompson). He is survived by his children, Anne Millar (Chuck) Wiebe and Douglas T. (Dr. Debbie) Millar and his grandchildren, Kit, Sally, Meredith, and Weston. A memorial service will be held at the family home in Wisconsin this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to The Watson Institute, 301 Camp Meeting Road, Sewickley, PA 15143, and Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Arrangements by COPELAND'S.
