Angelo Calabrese Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to Apr. 23, 2011.
Angelo Michael Calabrese died on April 12 after a long and happy life that was centered on his family and friends. He was 91 years and 11 months old. He was married to Teresa (Tirone) and they recently celebrated their 66th Anniversary on April 8. He was born in the North End and lived in East Boston and on Sumner St in Dorchester. He and Teresa permanently retired to Florida in 1980 and spent summers in Dorchester, then Weymouth, until 2006. They recently moved to Maryland to be near daughter Joanne and son-in-law Bill. He leaves behind wife Teresa and 3 surviving children: Joanne (of Clarksville, MD, and her husband William Serelis), Charles (of Newport, RI), and Paul (of Cancun, Mexico). He had 4 grandchildren: Paul Michael, Charles Angelo, Angelo, and Pamela; and a great-granddaughter, Sophia. Daughter Mary Grace (Queally) (1952-1974) and beloved dog Midnight predeceased him. His parents Giuseppina (Josephine) Bastile (1899-2001) and Calogero (Charles) Calabrese (1889-1981) emigrated from Sicily and married in 1916. His brothers George (1917-1992) and Salvatore (1927-2000), and sisters Grazia (1927-1929) and Gaetana (1922-1939) predeceased him. Many nieces and nephews still reside in Massachusetts. He joined the Army in 1938 and planned a military career, but was honorably discharged in 1943 due to service-related medical issues. He was a printer at Burroughs (now Honeywell) in Saugus until the plant relocated to Connecticut. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk supervisor at the Roxbury Post Office until his retirement in 1980. During this time, he also managed his wifes business, Teresas Beauty Salon, Columbia Rd, Dorchester. He and Teresa had an active retirement life at the Mainlands senior community in Pinellas Park, FL, where they made many friends and enjoyed old friendships with other Bostonians who relocated to that area. He was active in the Mainlands Mens Club and he took much pleasure his lake-view home by Freedom Lake Park. They lived in Florida until March 2010 when they moved to Harmony Hall (an assisted living facility) in Columbia, Maryland. Angelo and Teresa enjoyed the nightclubs of Boston, especially Blinstrubs. On Angelos last day of life, Jerry Vale and Connie Francis music played in the background. They traveled extensively | to Miami, the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Sicily, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii, and Greece/Turkey (for their 50th Anniversary). They were on numerous cruises and frequented various New England resorts | the Elms, the Concord, and the Beacon | always with their large circle of Italian friends and relatives. Angelo will be remembered as a caring husband and devoted father | his family was his most valued gift in life. His famous introductory line was they used to call me curly. He loved to eat and his favorites were pasta, Sicilian pizza, and jelly donuts. And above all, he loved Teresa, his wife of 66 years. Private services were held in Maryland. Donations to Gilchrist Hospice Center of Howard County | or sympathy cards - can be sent to the family at: Remembering Angelo Calabrese, 7299 Meadow Wood Way, Clarksville MD 21029.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have wonderful memories of your mom and dad - they were special people. Dad was my godfather and I was present at their wedding as I was only a few months old. Many times they were over the house to visit our grandparents and your dad and mine would share jokes. They loved telling them. You are in my prayers. Love Jo and Paul Barra
