Athens - Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, William Walter "Bill" Powell passed to our Lord on June 20, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. Bill is survived by his wife Carolyn of 42 years, sons, Mike of Athens, Georgia and Steve and his wife Lisa of Suwanee, Georgia and his cherished grandchildren Jessica and Matthew.
Bills' passion for people and focus on others was evident in all phases of his devoted life. Bill's educational background began with a B. S. from Alma College in Alma, Michigan. His educational career then began in Grand Ledge, Michigan where he served as an elementary school principal, high school teacher and coach for both the tennis and basketball teams. Upon receiving his Master's degree at Michigan State University, he became Middle School principal for Fowlerville Middle School. After further studies he received his PhD in Middle School Education from Michigan State University. During this time, he served as a principle developer for the concept of middle school education. Soon after, he joined the University of Georgia faculty in the Department of Middle Grades Education. Furthering his career, Bill moved to Georgia College & State University in the Middle School Education program. While in this capacity he developed an Education Administration program and became full professor. His future education years were spent teaching educational administration and school law. Upon retirement in 1994, he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Educational Administration at Georgia College & State University, Milledgeville, Ga.
Always there with a helping hand and a caring word, Bill influenced so many lives with his guidance, love and spirit and these will always be the lasting tribute of his legacy of service. His unconditional love and passion for family was his Greatest gift. Activities after retirement included moving to Sapphire, North Carolina. While there, he was a dedicated member of St. Jude's Catholic Church and active as a parish council & building committee member while lending his Great Spirit and voice in the choir. He enjoyed being a part of Sapphire Mountain Golf Club and Holly Forest Environmental Committee.
Bill is also survived by a brother, Ambrose Powell; sisters, Jean Cook, Rosalyn Haggarty, all of Lainsburg, Michigan, and Loretta Street of Idaho; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial mass will be Thursday, June 21, 2007, at 7:00 PM at the University Catholic Center, Athens, GA, with a reception to follow in the social hall. A memorial mass will also be held Sunday, June 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM St. Jude's Catholic Church, Sapphire, N.C., with interment to follow in the church cemetery. There will be a gathering in the social hall after interment services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Mary's Hospice House, Athens, Ga.
The Powell family would also like to extend a special thank you to the many dear friends that have been such a source of strength and encouragement on this special journey. We pray that God's grace will bless each of you as you have so deeply blessed and enriched our lives.

Dear Mrs. Powell, Mike, Steve,
I was so sorry to learn of Dr. Powell's passing. It was my pleasure to meet all of you and witness the love and care and courage you showed him and each other during the most difficult time in your lives. You have much to be proud of. I know the pain and grief you are feeling as I lost my mother in January, quite unexpectantly. Please, please let me know if there is anything you need.

I was one of Dr. Powell's graduate students. I so appreciated his help and guidance while getting my master's degree. The two things that I still carry from those classes are a comprehensive knowledge of school law and an appreciation of the interconnectedness of curriculum within a school. Dr. Powell was very kind and personable with all of us. I especially remember the times I was able to have dinner or lunch with him. I feel blessed to have worked with Dr. Powell, and I mourn his passing. He truly made a difference to those around him!

Dear Carolyn and Family,
Carroll and I are so sorry to hear of your great loss. As neighbors in Cedar Creek, we were privileged to know Bill and his reputation in middle school education. We are never ready to let go of the ones we love so much, but as I live each day with gratitude for being able to see our two daughters graduate from college, grow to be strong, confident women and wonderful mothers and wives, and to enjoy knowing our grandchildren, I realize that it is all a gift. Bill lived with a spirit of gratitude, for his family, his faith, his friends. In so doing, he was prepared to let go of this life, however much he (and we) wanted to stay. Great souls leave their mark on this life, and he will be sorely missed.
My heart goes out to you all as you grieve his loss.
We have moved to Braselton, GA, recently, and were not able to attend the service. God bless you in the days ahead as we hold you in our hearts and prayers, Carroll and Joan Humphries

Carolyn,
You have my deepest sympathy. Not sure if you remember me, but I remember you and Bill from St. Joseph's in Athens. I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Dear Mrs. Powell, Mike & Steve;
I'm so sorry to have heard about Mr. Powell. The last time I was back in Athens was for CSHS 20 yr reunion in 2005, then before that, it was high school, so it's been some time since I've seen you, Mike. I know what you're going through right now as we lost my Dad in February. It's a long road, one in which you will need alot of family and freinds support. It's only been less than 5 months for me, but my husband lost his Dad 6 years ago, and he says that the jagged edges never go away, but they do get farther apart.
My sympathies to the entire Powell family.
